I ordered a new Hartzell 2-blade prop a couple weeks ago, but they said there is a 4 week lead time.  When all is said and done, I will have been grounded for the better part of 4 months.

I hate being grounded and waiting.  Just needed to bitch about it.

I found that getting a 2 blade Hartzell for my F when I needed one it was cheaper to order it from LASAR than from Hartzell. I picked it up at the Hartzell center in Piqua, Oh. and they took back their shakemaster 3 blade they were trying to convince me was better.

While it wont increase the delivery any, you might check with LASAR on the cost. This was before the "top prop' was an option.

Time put into perspective...

are you ready?

1) I know a guy....  he had a health issue..

2) Thought Getting an engine OH and prop would fit in the schedule...

3) A factory reman engine takes two weeks plus shipping and install...

4) A prop takes four or six weeks plus shipping and install...

5) a good health issue may take a lot longer, maybe even years...

Did that help you feel any better?

I ordered through my A&P who gets an FBO discount which he passed on to me, I hadn't really thought shopping around would be worth it while buying a new prop

It very well may not be worth it, but in my case, it was a 3K+ difference.

I was in your shoes this spring--magneto died in flight in March, new ine crapped iut coming home in April, made on short flight in July, got it fixed right in August . . . 

The important thing is to get it fixed right!

It is the God-given right of every aviator to bitch, complain and generally grouse about life.  It says so right on our certificates.  The print is VERY small, so it's hard to see, but Orville and Wilbur had it inserted.

waiting is worse when it is artificial drama created by Repair Stations that think they know what they are doing and then you end up getting a box of parts back and have to fix it yourself.....  You want to trust the certification process, but it has lots of issues.

Three trips through the magneto overhaul shop . . . Paid a local A&P to drive an hour to the hangar and put it on twice, after the initial AOG away from home . . . At least I have the skills to remove it myself, although getting the battery box off the firewall (and back on) is a 2-man job (screws outside, nuts hidden behind the rudder pedals).

Get a tail dragged rating during this inactivity period.

Or a seaplane rating.

Or fly an LSA.  

Or get a helicopter lesson

Good ideas, but after buying the new propeller, my wife wouldn't go for that :unsure:

I was thinking along those lines when I decided to buy the new prop instead of letting them try to fix the old one.  At least there are fewer things they can mess other than dropping it.

I think my options were

$3K for overhaul

$6K for overhaul and new hub

$9.5K for new fancy prop

2 years ago.   I can buy lots of NDT inspections for $3K

I asked the NDT guy if he had ever found a bad hub.   Nope.

I hear you!

Every annual or when something needs repair and my airplane is down, I always thing, let's go get that tail-dragger rating, but I look at the expense and know I'm already going to be spending that money on the repair/upgrade/maintenance.

 

That said, I do have three goals I try to stick with and have every year since I've owned my first Mooney in 2008:

1.  Fly an aircraft as PIC other than my Mooney - flight with a buddy, renting something new, demo flight, something

2.  Upgrade the Mooney somehow - better it - new equipment, fixing something that's been deferred, small upgrade or big upgrade - instead of overhauling a part (understanding a prop or engine overhaul is expensive, I still would upgrade an accessory or something), upgrade it to something better - better the airplane more than just normal maintenance.

3.  Take at least once step to a new rating or sign off- now it's been years of working on the commercial rating, but I can say each year I've taken a step toward it.  I even got my Class II medical again just recently as I plan to use it!  Every box is checked in the logbook, just need to do the written, brush up on the maneuvers, and do the practical (oral and check-ride).  After I EARN it in 2017 I'll have to pick my next rating.

I don't know what they sell for now, but remember when I bought my 2 blade from Lasar, it was 7K vs. 10+K for the same thing at Hartzell. That was over 10 years ago, however. Todays pricing would have to be confirmed with all the players, my vote is based on old data.

So I got a call from my A&P.  We had the new prop drop-shipped from Hartzell and it arrived today.  With a hole in the side of the box and a couple of gouged blades.  Kind of brings new meaning to the phrase "drop-shipped."  Obviously, he didn't accept the box, and he made the shipping guy stay while they opened the box, so I should get a new prop, it's just a question of how long it takes.  Hopefully, I am not grounded for an additional 4 weeks :angry:

Sadly they don't build cardboard boxes like they used to.  I guess wood cost too much.
