Looks like if he heads towards Corinth and then turns south, he will miss the big cells. Should turn at 1750 to about 220.

I went to Shilo - then to Corinth, with my son last summer to visit the Civil War historic sites there.  By Mooney of course.  Unlike Mike - we went on high burn at high speed and when it was time to fill up, we would stop, fill up, attend to biological needs...and off we go.

Yea, I'm a 3 hr. leg guy myself.

Surprised he’s flying into the big airport, I try avoid class Cs and Bs.

Mikey likes the big ones….

In a recent flight he went to all of the NYC airports in one day….

He has really good radio skills….  :)

Best regards,

I've done 4 full speed ahead Scotty a bunch of times.  I've done up to 6 hrs LOP etc etc... but I don't enjoy this.  I figure I have a 5 hour machine max when used the way the rocket was designed and 4 - 4.5 is about right.   If my trip is longer than that then I break it up and I don't feel bad about it.  Plus it lets me go high and go high speed cruise which makes me happy seeing big numbers and I get to wear my funky blue mask.

Oh, after 40 years of flying and 38 years of Mooney ownership, I've flown the tanks dry quite a few times. But I've earned the right to fly shorter legs and enjoy life a bit more.

Well done Mikey!  That was some great flying!  I’ve crossed “the Pond” several times at around 8-9 hours each time, but I had to refuel many times to make that happen…

Why is that?

I like the spacing and control the bigger ones provide, and can’t stand the shenanigans that happens at uncontrolled fields. I try to stick to anything with a tower, and the big airports are usually well organized and safer in my experience.
I seldom fly without filing or flight following.

I’ve done 6 hours, that was enough.
It wasn’t the time in the seat for me, it’s the noise.
My ears rang for weeks after that trip, the noise takes more out of me than anything else.

Prices and smaller airports are closer to where I want to be anyway.

Easy to quarterback from our seat, Mikey s working his ass off I’m sure. Summer time in the afternoon is tough sledding. He’s quite experienced and competent.

I’ll do Delaware to Texas next week.

Who is going to Mooneymax hope to see some MS members there

We're leaving next Wednesday from San Jose, California and expect to arrive Thursday early afternoon.  We only fly in the morning and we lose 2 hours going there, so time goes faster.

So, how long will an F-15 fly on full tanks? After six or seven hours does the fatigue make it harder to join up with the tanker?

We could hold about 31,000lbs of fuel with the external tanks and burned somewhere around 7,000-8,000lbs/hour (total) in cruise ~25,000’.  So maybe 4 hours if you don’t count start/taxi/takeoff/approach or reserve.  More likely 3.  But we’d have 6 jets stay with several tankers the whole way and keep us topped off to make a divert possible in case a tanker boom broke or a fighter couldn’t take fuel.  You don’t want to ditch in the North Atlantic!
We also didn’t have HF so the tankers did all the ATC communication until we got close.  Unfortunately, they AF thought it safer to land in the light at a non familiar field in Europe after 9 hours, so that usually meant a midnight takeoff with your circadian rhythm trashed, coming off an 8 hour sleep on no-go pills (ambien) and a pocketful of go pills just in case.  Night join up and tanking with 3 tankers and 6 fighters was always mayhem (and probably dangerous).  I’ve never been so happy to see the sun rise until I realized it was right in my eyes and I couldn’t see the tanker at all except for the wingtips while trying to refuel.  The party at the oclub after landing usually went another 6-9 hours and then sleep for a day until you do it all again to get to the Persian Gulf.  It was real fun.

Well, I’m sure the high pay made up for it :P

Agree with Schllc that flying into the bigger airports can be easier and less stressful. Also, HOU is Houston Hobby, south of downtown, as opposed to the bigger airport on the north side. HOU is pretty GA-friendly, or at least it used to be when I used to fly into there 20 years ago.
