Best places for a long weekend or extended stay?

Recommended Posts

I'm wanting to plan a couple weekend aways to give to my wife for Christmas - she loves seeing new things. I figure that can go nicely with me wanting to go flying.

Anyone care to share you ur favorite long weekend trips or extended stays? I was thinking finger lakes NY area or down to the keys? We're based in Ohio so west coast probably isn't ideal.

Amelia Island, FL is an awesome place...and I happen to know someone (me!) who has a rental villa, ocean front on the top floor of a building in the Omni Plantation area that is available for rent.  And for fellow Mooney folks, I can probably figure out how to get you into my hangar at the airport right on the island (KFHB).  Not to be too much of a sales hound, but here's a link to our listing on VRBO: https://www.vrbo.com/772004

PM me if you want more details. But to be fair, I could recommend places from the Outer banks to Daytona that we stayed at before deciding on Amelia.  Isle of Palms (SC) is also wonderful with a nice airport close by (Mt. Pleasant, KLRO). Hilton Head is fun but somewhat too commercial for my tastes.  There are others. Good luck with your search!

looks like a nice place even appears to have a landing strip on the beach.  Looks like a twin on the beach.

St Simmons Island GA.  The off season is my favorite time (ie after Labor Day - before Memorial Day).  Air B&B or there is a hotel at the FBO.

Williamsburg, VA is awesome during the holidays, even kind of romantic.

Be careful about icing conditions and low ceilings this time of year, though.

31e is much closer. Any experience at that airport?

26N is walking distance to the boardwalk and beach.

All kinds of rental properties from condos to houses...

Family environment.

Not intimately familiar with 31E, but not very close to the beaches either...

If you want to use a remote Airport, and have big hotels with Casinos and great restaurants and shows... KACY...:)

Great for date night.

So.... Long Beach Island (LBI) is pretty far from 31E.  Will you have a rental car or Uber?...

Best regards,

Ocracoke is a good idea, and you can stop in at Kitty Hawk for a fun couple of hours. In addition to St. Simons, you’ve also got Jekyll Island right next door with an airstrip right on the island...it’s got a district of neat old homes from the gilded age where many of the New York wealthy had their winter “cottages” (you know, when Newport RI was too cold!).

All great suggestions so far.  Here are a few others:

Lake Placid - Fly into KLKP or LSLK, stay at Lake Placid Lodge http://lakeplacidlodge.com

Bradford, PA - Fly into KBFD, stay at Lodge at Glendorn http://glendorn.com

Nemacolin Woodlands, PA.   - Fly into PA88. Stay at Nemacolin (private runway on site). Http://nemacolin.com

White Sulfer Springs, WV - Fly into KLWB.  Stay at The Greenbrier http://greenbrier.com

All of the above will pick you up at the airport.

I know it is the wrong direction, but don’t forget about Toronto.   It would be a short flight.  Fly into CYTZ.  Stay anywhere in the city.

good luck,

brad

I have a dental meeting in June at Omni Amelia Island Plantation.  I'll keep that in mind when they open up registration.

I've been in there a few times. Had a hell of a time hailing Mcguire approach but other than that its a decent, quite spot. I think @Cris is based there with his Eagle.

Dont forget Panama CIty Beach, home of the Mooney Summit. @rocketman has 19 condos and 2 beach houses there that he can get you set up in reasonably. While not as short of flight as KELM or the fingerlakes, it is MUCH warmer this time of year and did I mention it has a beach? Granted, not nearly as many wineries, no gorges, nor hills as the fingerlakes, it does have some of the nicest sunsets this time of year and is a great place for hand holding.

+1 for the Florida panhandle. People forget it is still there this time of year. And if you are flying your Mooney down there, there are several short day hops to places along the coast to enjoy as well.

Ocracoke Island but off season now and probably real quiet, meaning no restaurants are open, etc.

We caught Ocracoke just prior to the season being over with.  No crowd but still everything was open.  We will certainly plan to go back, via Mooney only though.

There’s a ferry that goes there if you want to go by car.

This time of year my wife and I escape to Southport, NC (KSUT), Ocean Isle, NC (60J) or North Myrtle SC (KCRE) - they are quiet and many of the popular places are still open but fairly empty.  They refer to it as "snowbird season" when everyone from the far north comes down for months at a time to escape winter.

That’s my now part time and soon to be full time neck of the woods. Pretty and temperate this time of year. If you want to be by yourself on a beach it’s possible  My daughter splashed around the Atlantic last February and it was “only a little chilly”.

Also consider Charleston (history and food) or Asheville (artsy stuff and proximity to mountain outdoor) as weekend getaway spots.

In the spring and fall Charlottesville VA can’t be beat for mix of culture, wine/beer country, foodie scene, and outdoor activities.

St. George Island out by the Florida panhandle is a nice relaxing "Florida-ey" place that hasn't been commercialized yet. I'd also recommend St. Augustine, FL if you're into history and small districts full of old timey bars and restaurants.

Thanks for the shout out for my friend Gary Jensen who owns the Switzerland Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Spruce Pines NC. The Inn is great but it closes right after Thanksgiving every year until Spring.
