KSMooniac Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 I love the pic with mangled/dismembered wings and a very intact cabin structure! Glad the pilot is OK. 2 Quote
DAVIDWH Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 Wonder if it was a gear up landing similar to the New Acclaim street landing at Sun And Fun? Gear up seems to be the modis operandi when landing on residential city streets. No roll may be the way to go. Whew, now only insurance claims and a laundry bill to deal with. Glad no injuries here. 1 Quote
Yetti Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 Looks like some good piloting. doing what you need to do when you have to do it. 1 Quote

He is lucky to be alive due to where he crashed.....luckily police were on the scene quickly......Is there a mod to install guns either on a pod or embedded in the wing? DXB Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 Glad pilot and everyone on ground is ok- will be curious to hear details. My home field is also in a congested urban area- the prospect of engine failure is horrifying to me. Gear up may help extend the glide and find safe-ish spot to squeeze it in and get stopped? Interesting point for discussion in this type of unforgiving environment. Quote
PTK Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 Very glad the Mooney brother walked away safe and no one on the ground was hurt or worse. 1 Quote

The photo in this news story seems to show he landed with the gear down. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-plane-crash-whiteman-airport-20160222-story.html Quote
Steve65E-NC Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 Lack of Fire may have made all the difference. Wonder why there was none. If there was fuel in either tank it would have been all over the place. Some wet stains in the photos, wonder if they were fuel. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted February 22, 2016 Report Posted February 22, 2016 Glad no one on the ground was hurt! A pedestrian could have been severely damaged. Quote
IndyTim Posted February 23, 2016 Report Posted February 23, 2016 Given where he lost the engine (assuming that's what happened), hard to imagine a better outcome than this: pilot was able to refuse medical care, and no one on the ground hurt. Just some bent metal. Wow. 1 Quote

C'mon, it's not like he landed in Gramercy Park or Compton. He came down in the San Fernando Valley; at that hour he had a better chance of landing on a porn set than witnessing a violent crime. 5 Quote
tpapilot Posted February 23, 2016 Report Posted February 23, 2016 Here's a pretty decent News video http://ktla.com/2016/02/22/plane-crashes-on-street-outside-whiteman-airport-in-pacoima/ Quote

Ross I think it's a little too soon to propose a screenplay based on this concept . Quote
NotarPilot Posted February 23, 2016 Report Posted February 23, 2016 Glad he's okay. Now I wonder what kind of avionics he has on board... 1 Quote

FIrst off, I'm very happy that he's ok and no one was injured on the ground. It could have been catastrophic. Now the crew chief in me takes me directly to the gutter... A forced landing in the San Fernando Valley... The N-number ends in 'KY' ... there's got to be a message there somewhere. 2 Quote

201er Posted February 23, 2016 Report Posted February 23, 2016 Couldn't have been done better. Great job under tough circumstances. A much better controlled situation than pulling a chute! 1 Quote

DonMuncy Posted February 23, 2016 Report Posted February 23, 2016 It is really a shame how close he got to Whiteman. It looks like if he had started with another 50 feet of altitude, he would have made it. Quote
cliffy Posted February 23, 2016 Report Posted February 23, 2016 BTW I've flown in and out of that airport for 50+ years Landing on SF Road ain't so easy as it's VERY busy with cars. I have a couple of friends who crashed on it right about there, 2 years ago. Quote
Guest Posted February 23, 2016 Report Posted February 23, 2016 You'd think with that registration he could have slipped it in and greased it on. Clarence Quote
