9152015-252-1297_med.jpg1964 M20E (N6781U) - $35,000.00

this was on the lasar site . I saw this plane in Minden. I think it is a gem in the rough, or maybe a polished, badly, diamond.

Has not flown in a few years ,owner  lost medical.

This is where I got my E , must happen a lot out there.

That Lasar link renewed my hope:D

Not to offend, but the E looks a bit dated but the mods will clean it up.

But then again it's a couple years older than me so...

Dated or not, vintage 200hp Mooneys are the fastest, most frugal certified ships you can buy for your purchase money. Many years ago a magazine columnist wrote, "it's hard to fly a mooney and not admire how well it goes fast".

That's true of all of them from the smallest, low powered birds to the biggest, gas guzzlers cruising in the flight levels. Fly as many as you can before you start crossing models off...

I'd like the turbo because I've had some issues in the RG at 3000' airports in the summer.  Plus going to Denver with the wife would be nice.

My wife and I, with luggage for 10 days (plus a couple of small bags belonging to friends who couldn't squeeze them into their plane), flew into Cody, WY (elevation 5100 msl) at the end of August. My C model, with just 180 hp, had no trouble going in, nor leaving again with additional items plus full fuel. I hit 200 hours total, time on that trip. :D  An E will do better . . .

if your 3000' comment was about runways, I was trained and was based at a 3000 x 75 field with trees at both ends. Every flight started and ended there; out over the trees at gross was never a problem, I just made sure to use Takeoff Flaps then, and to not raise them until comfortably looking down at the treetops. Positive rate, gear up, she climbs much better; transit time is six seconds per the Owners Manual, but I think it's faster--a far cry from the Wounded Duck folding gear on Cessna retracts.

Most any Mooney will fit your mission. The C and E are the same plane, except for the engine; a J is just an F with a fiberglass cowl and additional aerodynamic cleanup. Turbos start with the K at 210 hp and go through TN at 310 hp, with the occasional NA model mixed in for fun. But be prepared for higher pricing:  purchase, operation, maintenance and overhaul.

Any way you slice it, any one of several Mooneys will fit the mission you have described. You get to enjoy the looking process, and celebrate finding just the right one! Go have fun!!

I'll see what I can find out.  I don't want to get into anything considered commercial or charter so I shouldn't have mentioned commercial since its just for knowledge and possibly insurance.

Either way I'll run it by a lawyer.

Reminds me of the old saw: it's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye.

Basically, you can pretty much do what you want until you either get a ramp check or have an accident.

Hank...'wounded duck'. That couldn't describe it any better. The first time in a 210 and the gear retracted I wondered if they were ok.

Your 6 seconds refers to manual gear?

Electric, manual gear is 1-2 seconds if that.

If I can get a nice E for $45 it would be more than half what I was looking at an RV7 for.

But I'm not opposed to going the RV route if it was built by the right person.

If you intend on flying IFR, not sure how many RVs have the required equipment, but I would stick with certified airplanes.

It shouldn't be too long before I'm finished with the Commercial license but for use as transportation now, I believe it is allowed now since my job does not depend on it.

What I'm saying is that I will not get paid for flying.  It's just a way for the company to save some money.

The reason I mentioned this earlier was that I had spent a considerable amount of time a few years ago reading through enforcement cases and advisory opinions trying to figure what was ok.   A few times a year I'm able to fly myself somewhere on company business.  What I found out is the FAA takes a very strict interpetion of reimbursement.  As long as it was just me, no coworkers and no supplies or packages it was generally ok.  You definitely need to talk to an attorney who specializes in aviation if your going to do this on any regular basis. Thing get a lot simpler if the company you work for owns the plane and you have a commercial license.  They will get a lot more usage benefit from the plane.  Here are a few examples that would be a violation for a ppl if accepting compensation.

Your going on a planned trip to inspect a project and at the last minute the boss says, "I just got a call from the jobsite and a machine is broke.  It's costing us $10k an hr.  Please give them this package as soon as you arrive"

Your going on a planned trip to inspect a project and at the last minute the boss says I think I'll tag along if you don't mind. I need to talk with the workers about some issues.

A friend calls one day and says he doesn't feel good and ask you if you would fly his plane to a nearby airport for maintaince and that he will pick you up. You fly the plane over for him and record the flight in your logbook but don't accept any money for it.

Lasar converted the windshield in my F to a J in August of 2015.

Ron

What was the total cost of the conversions?

Lasar prices are on the web site,  your cost of labor will be your shop rate.  the plane appears faster, I had several mods done at the same time, and seems quieter also.  All told I spent over 10amu on mods.   I am doing a total update, tanks resealed, leather interior and paint.  Looks great, wish they were done.  More pictures when available, teasers below.

You might be able to pry mine from my hands.....maybe.... :P. The price would have to be right though since all of the upgrades you mentioned are all done.....I really need to quit looking at Twinkies on Controller.com.....

What's a twinkie? Something faster, like a Paris jet?

carl

Too many windows to be an E. I think he calls it a F/J.

Thanks Carl.  Wish I could afford a jet.  Maybe if I hit that Mega Millions jackpot one day....

Marauder hit it already, I've been hot after finding a Twin Comanche for about a year.  Just haven't been able to pull the trigger because I do love my E model.  Now that I just changed out the seats, my butt should love it a little better on those longer trips.  I've always said everything I own is for sale....for the right price.... :P

Cheers,

Manual gear typically comes up faster than it goes down. Both processes are very fast. Probably 1 sec or less to raise and about 2 seconds to extend.

you can see a typical extension and retraction in this video..

Thanks for all the advice and knowledge.  This is awesome.

A few have asked about the budget.  If the company buys it I will set it at $150 but he is difficult to get a commitment from.  I'll be willing to spend $50 if I purchase it on my own.  So it's still up on the air.

A couple of the J models need overhauls. I know this is a shotgun question since the price range is broad but how much are we looking at.  You can give me a shotgun figure too.

Are there companies that specialize in financing for aircraft?

Thanks again for all the support.

There are a handful of banks that specialize in Aircraft Financing.  A simple google search will bring up a bunch.

Interest rates are all over the map and some won't touch twins, while others are kerosene burners only.  Find one you think you might like and throw the question out here to see if anyone is using them.  I financed a small portion of the initial acquisition and have paid cash for 90% of the upgrades I've done.  (I had to use my credit card for the 201 windshield because it was the last one LASAR had on hand and I wanted it before it disappeared....).

Cheers,

Brian

Thanks Brian.

I might have this worked out.  I'll keep y'all posted.

I'm going to look at threads on modified E panels or start a new post on that topic.

I have an M20K based at Arlington, Tx I may put up for sale soon.  I had her out to Denver last July- and nothing beats that turbo taking off at over 8000 ft. density altitude!  Cruising on top of the weather in the summer in Texas ain't so bad either, nice and smooth and cool.  Just got back from San Antonio yesterday making 200kts over the ground- sure beats driving!  Garmin 430W, autopilot, GPSS- the works!

Let me know if you want to take a look or go for a test ride.

A cheapskate overhaul with rebuilt cylinders and minimal new hoses and accessories, around 20 grand installed.   And another 8k over the first few years for a couple cylinders and accessories.  Maybe a complete rebuild in 400hrs when the cam spells again.  A factory overhauled engine installed with new hoses and accessories, around 37-38k.  A cam-spalled engine which, upon tear down needs a new crank and a case half, plus all the accessories and hoses, 40k.

Thanks for the engine quotes.
