Two ways around this problem.... either carry the earbuds in a plastic bag in your pocket, or move to a warmer location...

Not that big of a problem. Hey, frozen gel ear cups or really stiff cables suck too. Even worse when the gyros are frozen

Just imagine that this Bo guy had met an Acclaim !

Had I met an Acclaim , That was descending from 9000 feet to 4000 feet , and I was flying straight and level ,  we would not have been doing the same speed...... He would be faster , and burning the same amount of fuel...

I've had over 190 knots groundspeed on base.

PS I love it when a lowly 200hp Mooney whips it up on a 17 gallon per hour 285HP bonanza.

Alan was carrying a load of old avionics for sale or trade, I was coming home from Detroit last year and a smart ass in a Baron who was asked to go higher or lower for the faster moving traffic, he queried the controller who said immediate descend the Mooneys ground speed is 25 knots faster, after he went down and was humbled he went after the controller again saying it couldn't be a Mooney the controller asked if he wanted is prior altitude back the Mooney is 9  miles in front leaving you in his wake, silence. Hey they do have an attitude.

Too hot in summer and cold in winter. Worst of both :P

I will admit the suckiest thing about the halo headsets is that you have to thaw out the ear buds and warm them up or you can't get them in your ears. But once they warm up to operating temp, they're great.

With the silicone ear plugs, there is no "warming up." I just roll them back and forth once each way and push them in, no problemo. Foamies are different, but I don't care for them and hate them at work enough that I buy silicone plugs myself.

Not to mention what it does for mpg:

Let me get this straight:

We're always hearing: I don't like DC, they're too hot!

Now we're to hear that DC are too cold?

Make up your minds.

Keep the weather consistent and the headset complaints will be consistent. My only consistent complaint was headaches after a couple of hours; I blamed it on lowered oxygen levels until I got Halos, then they magically stopped (despite flying at the same altitudes).

In the summer, those big ear cups made my ears sweat; in the winter, they were very cold on my head when putting them on. And wearing glasses or sunglasses ruins the seal against your head, making them rather noisy. This is very obvious when changing from clear to sunglasses or back, as those moments with no glasses are much, much quieter . . .

I was coming back Saturday from Northeast Pittsburgh and going to Blairstown. I was getting up to 185knots groundspeed. A combination of great winter performance and a tailwind made for some awesome speed. Allentown approach cleared me to descend from 9000 so I reduced the power and took it down nice and easy. Some jerk in a S35 Bonanza, N5839S, decided to be a smartass and wanted approach to relay to me that my airplane wasn't fast enough. I pulled the liveatc and made video of the humorous exchange:

Apologies in advance but you both sound unprofessional.  It's interactions like this that make the pro's shake their heads.  Sorry for the brutal honesty but an ATC frequency is no place for pointless banter.  My2cnts...take it for what its worth.

Here comes the party pooper.

First off, I didn't start it. Second, Alan never sounds professional in the first place  (you can tell he's a Bo driver the moment he keys his mic). The frequency was not busy at all. I see no harm.

I hear pros doing things like that all the time whether on the air or online. So let's not put them on a pedestal. What makes me shake my head is when you get a five minute gang orgy tirade on guard after a guy transmitted on 121.5 by accident. Now that's distracting.

Yeah - I used to use Halo's for about two years - but eventually I went Bose A20.  I really do like them more.

I do remember a few occasions going to my hangar on a cold 0F morning when it had been maybe -20F over night and my hangar might still be right around -20F.  Ever put a halo ear bud into your ear that is chilled to -20F and you will fall out of love with them pretty quick!

Also word to the wise in the great white north. Never ever lick your window if it is -20F outside.  ... don't ask.

Not professional for certain but since was all said and done kind of funny to listen to. I always try to set my best example when communicating with ATC sadly I'm sure they have me pegged as a recreational pilot within the first few moments. A couple years ago while heading for Boulder City after making my turn at Palmdale Joshua advised of a Bo ten miles behind me on same heading he had me climb 500 feet well I kept looking and asked control again for position and he said still behind and not closing no factor and I'm in a little old D/C

This is my FAVORITE I'm going to faster than you - ON ATC frequency - story:

http://www.econrates.com/reality/schul.html

That story really confuses me. Brian schul is a very respected pilot. However, those airplanes would be on separate frequencies. I hate to question, but it's nearly impossible for that to happen.

I don't even have to click the link, I know which story it is.

"Yeah, you're probably right. Your instruments are better than mine anyway."

For the record, it wasn't Brian on the radio, it was the guy in back, Walt, who had a plethora of radios. I think I read at least five of them . . .

The story says the sr71 was above controlled airspace and didn't have to talk to them but was monitoring center if they would descend into the airspace. The other airplanes were too far from any approach control, so they too were on the same center frequency for the region. Doesn't sound impossible or unlikely out west.

It goes the other way too... checking in with Pit departing my uncontrollable (sic) field...

Me: N201QH off of Rostraver climbing out of whatever.

Dep: N201QH radar contact, c/m whatever.

... Dep: N201QH ... is this Brad?
... Me: uuuh why yes it is. Hi.
... Dep: well Howdy Brad. Have a nice flight.

Perhaps a slow frequency and a little bored. Who knows. As long as it doesn't interfere with operations and won't look stupid if they pull the tapes, it's ok.

I think it's great and ya know it can get dull for these controllers and I bet they get a laugh too.

On a flight non-stop, MN to NY not as long as your flights Mike had a controller ask me while enroute over the Lake Michigan if I could really make it non-stop as he had a bet with the other controller. The talk ended up with him saying Moonies are impressive.

Even the controllers get chatty sometimes!
