You are correct concerning  pricing, but one is a now a legal STC and one does not.

Clarence

At the present time neither one is STC'd for my airplane. But when the time comes my choice will be Garmin. The Dynon resolution looks like those old Atari video games I used to play in college! Archaic!

Love the ground breaking proof of concept that an STC is now awarded to a formerly experimental instrument.

This proof of concept will now open a flood gate of others.

I'll wait for G3X - we can be sure its coming.

But doesn't it make total sense.  It's like what the FDA does with drugs during clinical trials - three phases of pre-market assessment and then goes to market with a post-marketing monitoring phase.  Use the experimental folks as early adopters / groundbreakers and then take the advances and apply to the general fleet.  It's a move in the right direction for sure.

Someone had an idea

have I already mentioned the horrible things I would do for a skyview system in the mooney?

Exactly.  I'd be there with you...patience, patience.  I've had my fingers crossed for 2 years!

The EFIS-D10A is quite capable unit! It has plumbing for static, pitot, and AOA probe. Also has hookup to OAT probe and remote magnetometer so it can display airspeed, altimeter, magnetic heading, turn rate, g-meter, winds, density altitude, true airspeed. Backup battery is optional as well as the OAT, AOA, and magnetometer sensors if you don't want density altitude and TAS. It does require a GPS antennae as the attitude indicator logic requires airspeed input but if that has a blockage and stops working it can continue working based on GPS derived information. All the other instruments must remain in place. Only the attitude indicator gets replaced, but it makes for a wonderful backup for all the other stuff.

What the world needs (the older Bs Cs Ds Es Fs Gs world) needs is a good 2 axis autopilot with GPS tracking and Alt Hold for under $2000

I'd love to have one. OH wait, TruTrac makes one don't they?  That and something "Aspen like" would be the cat's meow for the old school crowd.

The TruTrac Sorcerer AP is really sweet! It's as smoother and easier to use than some of the Rockwell Collins P21 stuff.

I'd love to put one in!

Man!!...Input from the 530 and you'd have something like the Space shuttle cerca 1965!!

I think a Dynon has been to space at least 2x. Didn't Scaled's SS1 have it?

2200$ vs. 1200$ For the Garmin G5 and a much much smoother and slick display. High definition!

@PTK it's also a nice unit.  Squeaky wheels get the grease.  Call Garmins experimental folks and ask them if they are planning to get this STCd and encourage them to do so.  Suggest brands M&B may be an attractive market as brand C172 and PA28 alternatives to a main competitor.  Call the EAA and ask them to consider approaching Garmin about this unit.

Based on this news I'm probably going to join EAA.  Actual mileage doesn't vary.  That said George Perry and the ASF do great things.  I just think that the constant advertisements for life insurance and the like are a distraction.

While this is great news, I question if it will prevent gear up landings, improve maintenance, prevent pilots from running out of fuel, flying into IMC weather, crashing when the engine quits etc?  These things cause more accidents than flying behind a carbon vane vacuum pump and a vacuum gyros.

I was talking with Bob Wolstenhome while he was at sun and fun, when he told me that he was just sitting down for dinner with Garmin I asked him to question them about STC's for there equipment and based on Dynons announcement. I haven't talked to him about it since he has been back but I will post any info I get.

It is "O.K." To question.  I believe your are correct that pilot error will continue.  Less G paperwork and obfuscation appears like a win for manufacturers and users...like me.  Maybe getting more safety items like AOA and AH into more cockpits is a "good" thing?

In economic terms, maybe yes.  Maybe give people the opportunity to upgrade their airplanes at a reasonable cost and then the economics of making a pristine airplane, with beautiful panel, paint, interior and also beautiful maintenance runs in the right direction to the flying jalopies I mostly see around here - where people say the economics don't justify making their airplane nice.  They strive just to squeak it through annual one more year rather than to maintain something nice.  So I guess what I am saying is improve their chances economically to have something nice and maybe some of those folks will look at their asset (and safety!) a bit differently.

THis is great and I am glad EAA and Dynon managed to open the door so to speak. I think the real benefits are yet to be seen.

I am disappointed in the price. We don't know what EAA is charging for the STC yet but by the time you get the optional stuff it will be close to $4,000 .

The Aspen VFR unit is already available with more functionality at the same price.
