Does anyone know of an STC for a larger engine (like a IO540) to go in a early model Mooney?  I went flying in Clarence's 400HP beast last weekend (my Mooney is in for an annual and interior) and BOY does it hall A$$.  Opened the throttle on T.O. and by the end of the runway, we where doing over 180 mph and climbing at over 3000 FPM.  Not bad for something that has its tail on backwards.  It makes my C look slow and makes my old plane (Katana) look down right pitiful.

Now if I could put that much HP in a C model......  There has to have been someone out there that tried cramming those BIG JUGS under the cowl.

Way to go, Clarence!

Proof that HP:weight is addicting.  The first ride is free...

Mooney built a military trainer that was an IO540 on a short body with an M22 tail. (Fuzzy detail in this memory)

For the C, there is an STC to make it an E. 10% more HP.

Next stop, Missile.  300HP hung on the nose of a J.  50% more power!

The Standing O and Screamin' Eagle get 310 HP via an STC.

Ultimate power to weight ratio at altitude, a 310HP TN Acclaim.

Power to weight ratio is a hard ladder to climb...

Sounds like you had what may work out to be a very very expensive weekend outing with Clarence.

Hey, I'm not proud....when my plane is down and I can't fly, I'll bum a ride from anyone.  LOL

I was thinking more of the 300 HP hung on the nose of the C, not a measly 10% more.  Someone must have thought or tried this in the past.

Would need some help from Jose to fix those 196 liter tanks.

Roughly doing the math...

Engine 35 AMU

Prop 15 AMU

R&R 10 AMU

Add a few AMU for a new engine mount and cowl... 15AMU?

Add in significant tank upgrades at 201MKT mentioned above 15AMU?

This would only make sense if the airframe you had was in perfect condition and you reallllllly like it.

If this makes sense, Start looking for complete Missiles...

It was not quite like that.  In the length of the runway, 0-180 mph, then a nice gentle pull resulting in 3000 fpm climb. If you keep talking like this people will get the wrong impression of Comanches. The tail used to be straight, but has slowly bent back over the years.

We can upgrade you to an IO720, but your C will need more fuel and a second nose wheel to support the engine.

There is a Lancair for sale on Controller with an IO720. One of the hardest accelerating rides I have ever had was in a Cristen Eagle that had 320HP. When the PIC fire walled it my head was locked against the headrest  then 5 feet to the end of the runway then into a vertical climb. Simply Amazing!

you may even be able to go IO390 w 210 hp but I thought I heard Lyc was stopping production

Yes, the IO390...Lycoming's $60,000 answer to a question that no one ever asked.

Priced the same as the IO360 they probably could have sold them quite readily if Lyc could get a blanket STC to install them on all current 200hp IO360 apps.

I have never read a positive review from anyone who went the IO390 though so even if there was some compelling pricing, the performance/issues made it unattractive.

c'mon.  you know someone was wanting to know how to get 10 more HP for 5 minutes for $60k.

besides one of Jose's tanks and Clarence's Dually nose gear mod, you'll need one of Chris's babe's to hold down the rear.

He stated 210hp 6 cylinder engine then calls out an IO360 something does not match here.

Besides if I'm going to hang a 6cylinder on the front of my F I want 300+hp out of it.  No use in hauling the extra weight of an engine and extra gas if you really can't use it.:D

Or better yet 400SHP turbo prop:D:D

Most of the 6 cyl Conti IO360s are 210hp @ 2800 RPM.  I'm betting this one is limited to 2700. I'm not sure of the FF and weight difference, but back when I was renting Cessnas, there was one Conti O300 powered bird mixed in with the Lyc O320s.  Even though it had 15hp less, I preferred the little conti. It ran like a sewing machine compared to the 320s. So...much...smoother.

I agree that if you're going to go to the trouble, you might as well give it some balls.

Those are great engines. I flew a Hawk XP long ago with the same engine but at 195 HP. Very smooth! The cylinders and pistons and much smaller than the 4 cylinder Lycomings we use, so the weight is likely close.

I saw that STC on the FAA site years ago and have never seen a conversion in the wild until now.

Interesting thought.  Since a J is basically an F, and a Missile put 300 HP in a J, I bet it would be possible to get a Field Approval for it, but you would probably have to get the engineering data from Rocket and have an understanding FSDO.
