Sams clubs has oil aeroshell w100 at 67.00 in texas.  Of course you are doing the shipping.   Last I was in the Katy club there was a pallet of it up on the rack.    As far as what is in it, I think we can all agree that it goes from a well to a crude pipeline to Mt Belveau At this point it is all the same oil.  at some point they run it though a packaging plant and add the additives.  The funniest thing I ever saw was at a Texaco packaging plant.  They mixed a big vat of grease.  They then started filling grease tubes starting with the Texaco tubes and following right behind them were the wal mart tubes.  It is very well know that the quart of BMW motor oil for $7 is the same as $3 Casteroil that you can buy at walmart.    After we get done with the my oil is better than your oil discussion can we have the Ford/ Chevy truck is better discussion?

Oil filter changes at 100 hours? I have never seen anything that allows going past 50 hours for an oil filter change from any source... Really, it sounds like a reckless way to save 50c an hour, because you can change the filter at 50hr and it costs 20$. But you miss any evidence the oil filter can reveal because you ran it 100hr instead of 50hr.

I don't know. They said changing the filter more often shows very little debris in the filter. They also sent oil for analysis and they said there is hardly anything in the oil Generally, they told me that if the oil is changed often enough, then the oil filter can go longer. I don't know

It was absolutely me! I switched over from the Havoline to cooking oil since I usually bulk purchased from Costco for the girls and always bought more than they ever could use deep frying.

No problems to report since the changeover.

I've heard the Hellmann's can be used to pack wheel bearings in case you want to rotate a few tubs out of stock. Nothing ruins a mayonnaise sandwich more than a tub thats past its prime...

I run 50 hrs on oil and filter max.  If the plane has not flown much, I will drain 25hr oil at 5 month mark, I may of may not change the filter.  Oil analysis from Blackstone has always been positive regardless of time on oil.

I am also proactive about keeping oil temps in a healthy range, which in my opinion is 190-220df.  Here in MD, I could fly without an oil cooler from late Dec through mid Feb.  In the coldest months, I have the oil cooler completely blocked and its still a challenge to get what I want in terms of temps (I have the same issue with CHTs). I think a lot of folks overlook oil temp as an important part of keeping your engine internals happy.  If I were to just preheat and fly in the dead of Feb with no winterization, it would be struggle to get the oil above 155-160df.

They interesting about blocking the oil cooler off completely on my J in the dead of winter I encountered -38f at altitude and the oil stopped flowing out the cooler. Oil temp went from bouncing all over from 148-165 to 220f and rising a degree every 20 seconds in a matter of a few min. I had to reduce power to about 120kts true to get the oil temp back to 208ish. Every plane is different. Just thought this was interesting.

Ive always thought that planes flown in very cold places should have a cable actuated flap to control the cooling air inlet in the nose.

That would allow for proper CHTs and oil temp.

Many folks fight to keep these cool enough, but sometimes too much cooling is not a gooder thing.

Do you run a straight weight or multi?

Maybe I misunderstood him. I haven't even flown mine 50 hours before it went in for annual. Maybe he was saying every other oil change, change the filter too. I'll clarify with him. In any case, I saw the lycoming 50hr requirement, so I'll stick to that. ;) Thanks!

That was Phillips 20w-50 buy it was sold cold it was indicating about 160kts so not sure if I froze it or what

I also use XC.  I've never had it cease to flow no matter how cold.

I've had this have while flying a J model. I believe that the oil in the cooler congealed in the cooler and when the vernatherm valve closed and tried to send oil the the cooler the cold old in the cooler would not flow back to the engine.

It might be a reason that Reiff sells a heating pad for oil coolers.

I had it happen once at -5 F in my F also. It congealed in the cooler on climbout, JPI alerted me, I immediately turned back to KEYE, and it normalized on short final, all was good after that. My sump heater didn't warm it enough to take care of the oil in the cooler. Lesson learned, completely warm up longer than seeing op temps reached.

We have a local oil supplier who stocks Phillips XC 20w50. The last case a got from them a few months ago was $62. There are some decent prices online, but shipping adds another $15-$20. Look around for a local distributor that stocks it or see if you can talk one into stocking it.
