intercom selection

Hello Everyone..

 

I am working through my list of  things needed to be done.

 

I can't upgrade all at once.

 

I have an older two place intercom located under the panel below the pilot control yoke. Both jacks are on the same box

 

With the copilot's jacks plugged in the headset cord runs over and across the center which interferes with the johnson bar area. 

 

So I want a pilot jack on the left and a copilot jack on the right . I'll buy a new intercom for this.

 

What brand do you think is best , I am thinking just two place, front seats.

 

Any input would be helpful.

A low noise, stereo intercom paired with active noise-cancelling headsets makes a big difference in comfort.

I went with an integrated audio panel / intercom.

The PS8000 with Bluetooth works great for me.  Excellent audio, good ability to route audio from devices ("Terrain, terrain!") and entertainment (XM audio, iPad).    It has been useful to patch the cell phone in for calling ATC and FSS from the ground where there is no VHF radio coverage. 

I put Lemo plugs in the two front seat positions so no battery box issues with the headsets, either.

PS engineering is the intercom of choice. You'll need to decide which one fits your budget. I have 8000BT and love it. I've also had experience with a PMA 1000II which is on the low in of the cost spectrum and it works great too. Lee

The Sigtronics SPA-400 used to be the industry standard, is TSO'ed, is very simple (inexpensive) to install and works well. Solid performance at a decent price.

The PS Engineering PM1000 is probably the new industry standard for a stand-alone intercom.

I had the Sigtronics in my plane for years and it was a non thrills intercom that just worked. I have a PS Engineering 8000BT now and is really remarkable. As Jerry pointed out, lots of features.

If you are planning on other upgrades to the radios, you may want to wait until you do those as well. The intercom/audio panel is an integral part of modern avionics and you will save some money if you bundle other upgrades with it.

I had a stand-alone intercom when I bought my plane. Fought the cables, especially those going to the back seat. I installed the PM8000BT. After using it, I can't imagine having anything else. If I ever get a different plane that does not have one in it, that will be the first money I spend.

If you are spending the money...

BT would be a helpful aid for two things...

1) cell phone calls for clearance delivery.

2) in flight stereo entertainment.

I am still tuning in the ADF in the plane, but I am getting used to all things BT around the house...

I'm a big sigtronics fan.  Their tech support is outstanding.  I've always used their SPA400.  Very straight forward to wire up.

Intercom? Who needs an intercom?! They went out with the...bras! (For God's sake Chris, don't get any ideas! Your women need to keep theirs on! Ok!?)

Holy smokes, 8000 BT is mega bucks beyond me. totally awesome, but ADS_B is still coming and I have to save for that . 

 

So I am going to tell the avionic guy; Sigtronics SPA 400, or PS Engineering PM 1000 II     

both 4 place ( but I have not had anyone in the back yet.).

I checked, mine is PS PM6000 II, 4-place, works great. See what's available used.

I just removed a PM1000 II, and I never had a problem with it.  If you have an audio panel that already meets your needs, just add the intercom.  The removal and install prices of an audio panel can be expensive.  In my case, the labor was 60% of the panel cost.

Thank you to all you big spenders. My old KMA24 and PS Engineering Stereo intercom keep soldiering on just fine. I have a music input and audible gear alert/terrain alerts coming into my headsets...Price? Cheap...

Here's another vote for the 8000BT. The quality of streaming music from my iPad is excellent and the ability to call ATC at an uncontrolled airport for an IFR clearance while listening to my phone through the headset is its best attribute.
