Mooney Mod Squad

Recommended Posts

While researching a 231 to 252 upgrade, we find that they are the ones that own the STC. Well after about a week of calling both their office and the owners cell phone I can not get a call back from them.

Is the Mod Squad out of business or does anyone know of their status??

They are no more. Some of the forum members I believe know where the former owners went.

I would like to get in touch with Bob Meier if anyone knows how.

Thanks in advance,

Walt

Walt, he is in Wimauma, Fl. at a private grass strip there. I have his # at home, but not with me, and wont be there for a week or so.

Possibly one of the Florida lunch group guys can chime in or Sam Lindsey for sure can give you the number if you need it before I return (941) 209-2322

That brings up an interesting question....  If the OEM goes out of the business, the TC is surrendered and the type data goes into the public domain so the owner operators can maintain their aircraft.  Wonder what happens with an STC in that situation?  Does that go into the public domain and is available to anyone?

In the case of Modworks, the FAA data is old, they still show him the STC holder, and he split town, so the STC's are "dead" for lack of a better word.

I had been looking into the public domain STC's a few weeks ago. There are a few. From what I can tell it requires the owner to write a letter to the faa stating that they wish for them to be placed in the public domain. They can then be obtained by contacting the faa and requesting them. Does anyone have any additional info on this? This seems like the honorable thing for the owner of an stc to do if they no longer wish to support or sell it. With a little urging or perhaps a little money it might be possible to get some of these abandoned mooney stc placed in the public domain. I would be willing to contribute to the effort.

Here are 2 examples.

I also found this article where the faa clearly said they did not automatically fall into the public domain if the owner died or went out of business.

http://www.ihs.com/news/2006/faa-aopa-aircraft.htm

From what I remember reading about modworks, it seems like someone mentioned a bankruptcy was involved, if true would be interesting to know how the assets were officially disposed of.

The STC's were discussed here.

Mike, thank you for the information.  That was interesting but Its unclear to me if there was a final ruling.  The AOPA's recommendation is consistent with the FAR says for the holder of a TC.  The last link in the article didn't work for me.  So I starting googling (amazing tool that thing is) and I found this:

www.faa.gov/aircraft/draft_docs/media/8110_sur.doc

Since its has draft all over it and its a word file, I guess this is still work in progress. Hopefully this will go out someday as a NPRM in the federal register.  In the meantime, I think its voluntary for the holder to surrender it.

Maybe flywalt could write his local ACO and see what they say, if he really wants to pursue this?

The fellow who started this string referred to Mod Squad.  The conversation seems to have diverted over to Mod Works, a completely different company.

As I recall Mod Works was started in Punta Gorda, FL by Coy Jacobs and others.  Coy left Mod Works, sold his interest, and was part of the start up of Mod Squad in Venice, Fl.

Mod Works, with Tim Coonts as principle, disappeared in a hurricane and apparently its STCs are orphans.  This was also the scence of the Mooney Porsche demise.

Mod Squad continued on and probably also has some STCs.  Actually I think Coy Jacobs could probably guide you to those, if he will.  However, I also think a call around the existing vendors at Venice Airport would lead you to someone who owns and controls those Mod Squad STCs.  I have a feeling the principals of Mod Squad are still operating in some form at Venice.

It was Mod Works that had STC from 231 to what they called a 262. The ONLY way you will get one today is to buy an already modified example. There aren't a lot of them, but they do occasionally come on the market.

I believe original Mod Squad was in St. Louis, with Coy Jacobs as a principal. Resurfaced in FL as Mod Works in Punta Gorda. Coy couldn't get along with other owners and left. Later Hurricane Charley destroyed much of Punta Gorda airport including Mod Works. They have not been heard from since.

There were two conversions that were essentially identical, but done by different entities. I had my 231 converted to a Trophy 261 at Mod Works, when Coy Jacobs was still there. Later Coy left, Tim stayed and ran the Mod Works, and Coy ran the Mod Squad where he made the 262 conversions. I've been out of touch with both of them for many years, but I did speak briefly with Coy about a year ago when I was trying to find an articulating co-pilot seat. His website was still offering some Trophy conversions, but not the 261/262 variants. Too bad, as the 261/262 conversions were quite well done - essentially a 12 volt 252 with some additional speed mods. I owned the 261 for about 16 years, and it was great airplane - except for using Mobil One fully synthetic oil (as then recommended by Mooney).

I think I remember hearing Bob Meier was working with Island Aircraft Sales in Sarasota, FL.

http://islandaircraftsales.com/

There's a link on their page that seems to point to a "Mooney Mod Squad" that lists Bob as a founder / technical advisor.

You might call Island Aircraft Sales and see if they know how to get in touch with Bob, if the Mod Squad numbers have all gone dead.

It is bad karma on YOU to speak poorly of other people. Be it deserved or not.

My two cents,

W

Coy is a danger to the flying community and other pilots need to and deserved to be warned of people, a term used loosely in this case, like Coy.  I strongly urge pilots not to call or seek out information from Coy as you are putting your life and the lives of your passengers into jeopardy.

I'll take the karma risk to save another pilot and/or passengers.

I actually spoke w Coy this week. I'm new to the Mooney scene. I just purchased a 1982 M20K that was a government seizure. The Ex-wife was kind enough to point me in some directions, as her husband is now in jail. She mentioned Mod Works as having done some work in the past (I'm trying to track down and recreate logs that are missing - again the ex said oldest son was instructed to grab them and stash them). I found him by calling a place called Mooney Mart. He answered the phone with a 'hello'. Alas, he didn't seem to be able to offer me any help, but I was just seeking records.
