Post-Oshkosh Trip Ideas

Recommended Posts

Soliciting ideas for a post-Oshkosh trip.  Our route is DC-OSH-DC.  We plan on leaving Oshkosh on Wednesday or Thursday of the air show.  We're need to be back in D.C. maybe Monday, so we have 4 days.  If it were up to me, I'd just make it a whole week at Oshkosh, but dear husband says he'll be fed up of camping and will have fully-shopped all the Pavilions by then and would like a nice hotel or B&B to recuperate in.  I thought maybe Mackinaw Island, but am worried that that's more like a one-day destination not a 4 day destination.  Other ideas within a couple hundred miles of our route?  (We're not ruling out destinations in Canada either, we have Canpass and are comfortable making the border crossings).

Becca, I'll piggyback on your thread which I suppose others are interested in...

I'm considering similar "opportunities". Nancy has retired from AirVenture after 3 years and my co-pilot is my 17 year old grandson. We'll be coming from MA and eventually returning there. I wonder if Mt. Rushmore and other MT, MN, ND, SC destinations might make sense while "we're in the neighborhood".  @kpaul, this is your old stomping ground...

We totally considered heading west but everything seemed too far.  DC-OSH is about 600 nmi.  OSH-Bozeman is 900 nmi!  We did an air race to Osh a few years ago from Mitchell, SD, and I was like "let's pop over to mount rushmore."  But "popping over" turned out to be like 300+ nmi!  The west is expansive.

For your grandson, have you considered Niagra Falls?  Also, if you want to do outdoorsy things if you like to fish there's some great options in the UP of Michigan or Sault-Ste-Marie.

Apparently I have more ideas for you than for me :)

We went to Frankenmuth Michigan a couple of years ago.  My wife wants to go back this year.  The world’s largest Christmas store is there along with an aviation museum and a brewing museum. Had good German food and beer

That's easy...Go West! If exploring the West you need some time though.

I would go check out Green Bay if anyone likes the NFL, The Packers have a great HoF at Lambeau Field.  Not too far away is Mackinac Island.  Niagara Falls is always nice.  And of course you can't go wrong landing at KFFA.  Those boys from Ohio knew a thing or two.

Little Island hopping perhaps?  A day or two on Mackinaw, then perhaps a day on South Bass Island?  By the time you get that done it'll be time to fly back to DC.

I'm going to second Michael's suggestion and suggest some island hopping.  Mackinac Island for a night (stay at the Grand Hotel if Byron doesn't mind packing a coat and tie) then South Bass Island (also known as Put-in-Bay) for caverns, dinner, and beer drinking, then home. Easy, affordable, and nice relaxing change after the hustle and bustle of OSH.

So the Red Sox game went 17 innings last night keeping me up to 2:00 AM so I was playing with Garmin Pilot... comments welcome.

KOSH-KSTP 1-1/2 hours St. Paul MN (find something interesting to visit)
KSTP--KASY 2 hours Ashley ND (I've never been to ND)
KASY-00F 2 hours Broadus MT (I've been to MT but not in the Mooney)
00F-W43 1/2 hour Hulett WY (another state I have not visited, there's a place called Devil's Tower near by)
W43-KRAP 1/2 hour Rapid City SD visit Mt. Rushmore
KRAP-KHEQ 1-1/2 hours Holyoke CO (I've never been in CO with Mooney)
KHEQ-KBRL 3-1/2 hours Burlington IA headed home
KBRL-5A1 3 hours Norwalk OH
5A1-6B6 3-1/2 hours Boxborough MA, Ben's home

2473 nm, probably 20 hours of flying. I'm thinking 3 or 4 days... probably too ambitious for an old guy...

Bob,  I'll look at you flight plan after work tonight.  There is not much in Broadus, MT.  But if you are just looking to touch down in MT, it would work. I also think there was a thread discussing airports near Mount Rushmore, KRAP is a bit of a drive.

Why Norwalk?  Ohio isn't necessarily the world's greatest vacation spot, but there are cool things to see and do.  I can't think of any that are in Norwalk.

Headed for the barn, about half way between Iowa and MA. Subject to tweaking based on fuel prices and pireps from folks here with local knowledge.

I had Billings in initially. Looking for local pireps. I've been in Billing when I was a cattle hide buyer in the '60s - big sky was awesome. I hope we can sight see from the air and  if we have a week we can add more interesting stops. This outline is a first draft. Each stop can be evaluated and changed.

BNorthwest Michigan is awesome!!!  One of the best kept secrets. And that’s from a guy who lives in Ohio.

Sleeping bear dunes,

Traverse City

fishtown

Charlevoix

petoskey

Harbor springs.

gorgeous water and beaches. Fun little towns with restaurants and as my wife says “shit shopping” if you go to Harbor springs buy sandwiches from a little place called Guerneys, then go to Tom’s Mom’s cookies grab a table and some chocolate chip cookies. In the upper peninsula you can see the locks, as well as white fish point has a great ship wreck museum that houses the bell of the Edmund Fitzgerald. ( no airport close )  also pictured rocks are awesome up that way.

you can make a few days out of it, and it’s not often most people are up that way.

So, as intended this is a work in process... thanks for the suggestions. Here's the latest version, surely not the last. (My co-pilot, grandson Ben, is 17. We'll be less interested in nice hotels and gourmet dining on this trip than we would be when my companion is Nancy. OTOH Ben will take 100x the pics that Nancy would so spectacular is of interest.)

KOSH-KBIS 3-1/2 hours Bismarck ND

-KBZN 3 hours Bozeman Yellowstone

-KWYS 30 minutes Yellowstone West

-KCOD 45 minutes Yellowstone Regional (WYS-COD is a scenic flight)

-KCUT ~ 1:45 flight CUT is closer to Mt Rushmore

-KDSM 3 hours Des Moines - headed home - stops along the way could easily change.

-KBKL 3:45 Burke Lakefront (Cleveland)

-6B6 3 hours Minuteman Airfield - Ben is home (2828 nm, 19.5 hours, 178.5 gallons 100LL Not including getting to KOSH)

Looks like a cool trip Bob especially with the youngster

The mountain legs would be easier in your Bravo!

So my latest, but certainly not my last, is:

KOSH-KDTL-KBIS-KBZN-KIDA-KLGU-KCPR-KCUT-KDSM-KBKL-6B6.

3067 nm for KOSK-6B6. Plus 914 nm 6B6-KMSN-KOSH Plus 1242 for KMRN-6B6-KMRN totals 5200+ nm spread over about 3 weeks.

Well that's generous... but I think I recall putting 100LL in that beast one time... I think I'll pass. I can putter along at 145 ktas at 8.0 gph, better mileage than Nancy's Chrysler hemi.
