Congratulations! Great looking bird. Taking home that new plane was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I'm sure you feel the same. Enjoy your J; one of the best to come off the line in Kerrville!

That's a lovely aircraft, inside and out.  

Question:  What is the function of the black leading edge?  Those aren't boots, are they?  Is it just a surface treatment?  If so, does it work?

Looks great! I painted the leading edge of my Cherokee gloss black. It was easier to touch up when necessary and the bugs didn't show as bad and cleaned off easier. Mine tapered off at the back of the fat Hershey bar wingtip. I thought it looked good. Still not a Mooney though. The low pass picture is beautiful.

Purely cosmetic, makes cleaning the leading edge a bit easier, also looks nice IMHO.
