Potential maintenance clinic at KUKT

Today during the picnic at KUKT it was apparently decided that I should hold a Mooney maintenance clinic. I am more then willing to do that but I would like some inputs on what topics Mooney owners would like covered and who would be interested in attending.

I believe mapa used to or periodically have maintenance clinics possibly get ahold of Trey and see if the syllabus is available..also the safety foundation have a couple guys who provide some instruction as part of the 3 day flight program maybe something is available from thi, these, sources..sounds like a great idea especially for non mechanical folks like myself..

Dan,

Those sound like great resources. currently what I am looking for are the topics people would be interested in and then building a syllabus based on the most requested topics.

I was thinking about it more last night and started putting a list of ideas together:

Owner performed maintenance- What you can do on your aircraft.

Removing and replacing the cowl

How to perform an oil change, oil sampling and filter inspection.

Aircraft jacking

Changing a tire and servicing bearings.

understanding your maintenance manual, service intervals and inspection requirements.

I could take atleast a full day covering these topics, I'm sure there are more topics that people are interested in.

Brian -- I did owner assisted annuals through a good portion of the 1990s. I would love to go through a refresher for the owner eligible maintenance items. I will need to go look for my safety wire tool. I know I left it around here somewhere.

Brian..that's a good way to put together a program, I'd consider how long should it be and tailor the program accordingly, in our area theres not much out there I'd even think if you had certain professionals in accordance with your syllabus a fee could be charged for expenses of those experts. I'd bet it could turn into an awesome program that could be put on an annual basis and built upon.

Something like a northeast/midatlantic Mooneyspace maintenance clinic would most likely grow into an awesome event.

It seems like anytime there's a function worth attending it's never in our area.

Sounds awesome to me and the content is huge to ascertain a functionality to present.

Dan,

You missed an awesome function yesterday, we had a great picnic at KUKT with people flying in from all over. I agree we need more events in the north east area but we do not do too bad. if your on the NJ Mooney group E-mails go out on a regular basis suggesting places to meet up for lunch and other events. a couple of years ago we even had a well attended christmas party in Lancaster.

In the future, I think many folks would be interested in the following topics:

Wheels, tires, brakes and bearings.

Accessories - access, removal and adjustment.

Tail components and elevator trim - lubrication and wear items.

Gear preload, settings and adjustment.

Jerry Manthey is no longer doing the MAPA clinics.  If Don Maxwell would pick up where Jerry left off, that would be great but I wouldn't hold my breath.  He's so busy with his day job it might not occur until he steps away from his business.

On a side note, Jerry didn't attend this year's MAPA Home Coming.  He's been a staple for years so it was strange not seeing him there.  Hopefully he's doing well.

I am now getting more focused on maintenance issues now that I have my plane back in Massachusetts.  I am pretty mechanical, and know a reasonable amount about the airplane for its extensive restoration, but I would like to know more about:

1) the things that I can do myself

2) the things that I might be able to work with an A&P's supervision

3) more about standard A&P mechanic's procedures and what is acceptable techniques

4) engine operation, things to watch, engine function, what should peak my concern

5) a list of proper torque specs and tools to own

6) tools to keep in the plane

7) plug cleaning, gapping, fine wire plug inspection/maintenance

8) the vintage maintenance manuals are not great - can one look to a J manual for F model information, which edition of the Mooney manuals for my plane are the most complete?

These are just a few of the things that come to mind.

Brian..I know I missed a great outing yesterday of which I wish I could have attended, I have 2 new puppies 3 months. And 6 months, and I stupidly told my wife I'd hang around until they were house trained yeah I'm dumb, trying to house train 2 yorkies is no easy feat..good news they are coming along bad news I also usually play golf about 3-4 times a week, so far this yr only out twice..hopefully I'll be back soon..

Brian , since I volunteered you for this exercise in futility , I will be more than happy to assist , I think the clinic should focus on Mooney specific items , I think we should rig and set preload on someones gear especially a J-Bar , Gear stack inspection , lube points on rod ends and trim universals , proper jacking , visual inspection of Brittain servos , SB 208 compliance , and common corrosion issues associated with older short bodies....I think we should do at least two oil changes , two jack ups and gear swings ,  one weight and balance , .....we will have to have any one who volunteers his plane to be penciled in at least two weeks in advance , tell me what tools to bring and I'm there.....  I may even be able to get an Avionics guy to do Pitot static tests.......

Brian- I'd be very interested in this - BTW wish I could have made it to the picnic today.  I just learned oil/filter change and want to get more of the basics like spark plugs.    I'd get a lot out of just about anything at this stage too.  Assuming it's on a weekend this summer when I'm not traveling, I'd be willing to do anything to help, including volunteer my M20C if needed.

When were you guys thinking of for time frame?

Clarence

the request was just sprung on me so I am just in the the beginning stages of planning, my initial thought was to do it on a Saturday some time in the fall. I am open for suggested dates and I love the enthusiasm already being displayed, if everything goes well I thought we could do a spring follow up covering topics that were not covered in the fall. out of curiosity are you willing to come down and help out?

I would certainly do my best to be there. If US customs service lets me, I could bring travel boards etc.

how does the second to third week of august time frame sound to you? that will give you time to work out customs issues and me time to put together a good syllabus. I'm sure we can come up with enough stuff to a full weekend but I think I want to start out with a single day and cover more of the basics and a general how to vs getting into rigging gear and flight controls. that type of info will help our Mooney owners know what should be done, down the road we can tech them how to do it.... we can call that an advanced maintenance class :D

How does August 22nd sound for the Maintenace clinic? I have started recheing out to differnt contacts and tempest will send out one of there reps to do a presentation if one is avalible. there seems to be plenty of support for this so I am going to start putting it together. first thing first is confirming a good date, after that we will set up event registartion.

We are returning from vacation a few days before that, but yes it is workable for me.
