IvoryM Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Hey guys, Any recommendations on what is the best 12 volt battery for my Mooney M20E? Thanks, Mitch
Hank Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 You want this. Took the picture last week after cleaning the terminals during annual. Says installed 12/2010, cranking fast and strong. P.S.--its never been plugged into anything, except where the electrical bus attaches to it. 3
Immelman Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Concorde RG-35. Chief shipped it for free (and no sales tax)... I just replaced mine, because I figured 7 years in service on the last onewas a pretty good run. It was still going strong. 1
rbridges Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 got mine from Chief, too, since spruce charges tax to GA residents. 3 years on a float charger and doing great. knock on wood.
scottfromiowa Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Make sure and get the XC...Extra Cranking. Worth it....+1
oldrockfan Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Concorde sealed got my money too. Costs a bit more but worth it based on what everyone reports for longer life 1
stevesm20b Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 I went with the Concord sealed 3yrs ago and have not had any starting problems. No more acid in the battery box.
EDNR-Cruiser Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 I kissed my old Gill good-bye and went for the Concord RG-35AXC in 2013... - almost need no engine anymore, the starter turns fast enough... 1
DrBill Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 +1 for Concorde... Be careful not to OVER TORQUE the bolts and strip the holes Use a torque wrench and be sure your mechanic uses one too. That's what happened to my "old" one and I now use it (7 years old) for my House Generator. Really worth the money. Bill
slowflyin Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Concorde with the XC! With my skytech I can almost taxi it cranks so good! I also like the XC for IFR work.
kevinw Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 I replaced my Gill with the same battery about a year and a half ago. It's already starting to crank slow. I'm replacing it as soon as it's out of the avionics shop with a Concorde RG-35AXC. MS members overwhelmingly prefer Concorde...now I know why.
Cruiser Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Concorde all the way.......... RG24-15M #1 installed April 2005 RG24-15M #2 installed August 2006 on a BatteryMinder 24/7
Marauder Posted February 5, 2015 Report Posted February 5, 2015 You're all invited to my Concorde's 10th birthday in April. 1
kevinw Posted February 5, 2015 Report Posted February 5, 2015 Concorde all the way.......... RG24-15M #1 installed April 2005 RG24-15M #2 installed August 2006 on a BatteryMinder 24/7 Perhaps that's my problem; I don't use a BatteryMinder. Seems too inconvenient to have to open the access hole and battery box every time I fly. Fumbling around with cotter pins, etc.
carusoam Posted February 5, 2015 Report Posted February 5, 2015 There are ways to make the battery minder more convenient. They bring a plug to convenient spot to ease the connection hassle. Best regards, -a-
Hank Posted February 5, 2015 Report Posted February 5, 2015 I'm too cheap to buy a Battery Minder for twice the (already high) aircraft battery price, and am going strong entering my fifth Concorde year. YMMV, this is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any financial or aircraft difficulties, etc. Just an anecdotal record of my experience.
Bob_Belville Posted February 21, 2015 Report Posted February 21, 2015 I just ordered a Concorde RG-35AXC to replace a Gill I installed in an emergency 6 months ago in my M20E. $272.50 from Chief. Free freight. The new Gill did not crank as well as the old Concorde I replaced. It failed to start the plane last week when engine was preheated and warm but the battery was cold. 1
Andy95W Posted February 21, 2015 Report Posted February 21, 2015 I went to an aviation conference recently and heard an interesting piece of information regarding Gill. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information, but it sounds about right. Gill used to make really good batteries until around 5 or so years ago. The story goes that they purchased equipment to automate their process and as a result the quality of their batteries declined. Since they have so much invested in capital "improvements", they can't go back. Concorde batteries are still largely made by hand.
ArtVandelay Posted February 21, 2015 Report Posted February 21, 2015 I'm not sure I buy that, batteries aren't that complex or precision required in manufacturing. They would be affected by quality of materials. I wonder how many check their batteries water levels on a regular intervals? The maintenance free batteries may be better because they need less attention? They also have better cranking amps due to their construction
HRM Posted February 26, 2015 Report Posted February 26, 2015 Hey guys, Any recommendations on what is the best 12 volt battery for my Mooney M20E? Thanks, Mitch Our E's are sisters: N5976Q/#848 Concorde, and don't bother with a BatteryMinder.
