The job (all new Garmin stuff) is underway!  Just got the following pic from the shop.

In 8 weeks should have a G500Txi (+EIS and Cies Senders), GTN650Xi, PMA 450b, GI-275, GFC500, GNC255, GTX345, GDL69A, and the Airtex 345 here.

What springs out when you remove a Mooney panel. :-)         Be careful not to stuff the  gremlins back in when you finish.  
Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I'm very happy with the panel. I'll probably want to make some new placards someday.

The new ELT antenna is a bit of a drag. (You see what I did there?)

From the label it looks like it's dual band (121.5MHz and 406MHz); 1/4 wave at 121.5MHz is around 2 feet.

I don't believe so.  However, old 121.5 installations are still ok, but any NEW installation must be 406 MHz.  Having said that, I think that some NEW 406 MHz beacons ALSO have a 121.5 'homing' transmitter, as well, for final aircraft location.  That is likely why the antenna is dual-band.

Out of curiosity, what made you decide to go with the G500txi versus the G3X Touch? Seems like most people choosing the G500 are interfacing with a legacy AP, but the G3X Touch and the GFC500 (nee G3X AP) were cut from the same cloth and play very happily together.

Make sure you replace all placards required in the limitations section of the AFM/POH before the next annual or ramp check. ;)

All the 406 MHz ELTs broadcast on 121.5 also. Still useful for finding a tripped ELT with a handheld radio.

Beautiful panel. I’ve gotten two quotes for almost the same equipment. Could you let us know how you decided to get the GTN 650Xi + GNC255 versus a GTN750Xi + GNC355 (two WASS units plus two comm units) or a GTN650Xi + GNC355 or a GTN750Xi + GTN650Xi? I’m with you in terms of the G500Txi + GI275. Thanks. John.

A guess that future integration options would be better or more flexible.

Both seemed comparable enough, but after so many chats with shops and PIREPs from owners it seemed hard to imagine the price premium isn't justified.

interesting. i asked the same question, and had a TXI quoted and a g3x quoted.... and it seemed the common consensus was the ability to remote mount some stuff (second com/transponder) and the fact that the g3x also can drive the GFC500 AP if the 275 or g5 fails had people leaning towards the g3x.  it seemed people who installed either were happy.

Garmin makes an bewildering array of avionics developed by different teams, at different times, for different markets, using different technologies. It's a wonder they can make it all work together, and, in fact, some configurations work together better than others. 

I wanted a GFC 500 autopilot, so I chose the G3X Touch and G5 because these were designed to work together as a system. If I had a different autopilot, I would have made a different choice. But the CAN bus architecture allows the G3X, G5 and GFC 500 to communicate and share data between themselves and the other LRUs that make up this system (GSU 25D, GMU 11, GTP 59). This creates a very robust system with a high degree of integration. Two really nice backup features this affords are the ability for the PFD to use the G5 ADAHRS if the GSU 25D fails, and the ability of the autopilot to use the G5 flight director if the PFD fails. Unless Garmin has made changes since I looked into it, there were a lot of limitations on the GI 275 when used as a standby instrument for a G3X making the G5 the better choice with a G3X Touch.

That's where mine is and I believe I have the same antenna.  Hate it!!!

Ran through the book and everything looks there, except the RPM limitation is no longer on the right panel adjacent to the tachometer, but directly below the Vernier controls.  Would that be improper? I suppose it would be possible to comply with half of the description if placed adjacent to the tachometer which is now in the left instrument panel.

I placed mine above the PFD on the side with the engine gauges.

The other placard that is often forgotten in the one for speed brakes required by the STC if you have them.

Yeah, also on the center console below the vernier.

I like the idea of putting the RPM one above the PFD.

You absolutely made the right choice.

If I were to critique a bit...I personally would've gone with a separate EDM900 or 930 - and done away with the EIS.  If your G500 TXi ever craps the sheets, you don't lose your engine data.  I would've also moved the GI275 up a bit further in the panel to center with the G500...but that's just the airline pilot in me talking.  Pic of my previous Ovation's panel before I sold it.  My new Ovation will look about exactly the same when it's completed.

Good call on the CIES transmitters tho...they can't be beat.  Overall, I love the panel.

StevenL, what is the instrument below the GTN 750Xi in the photo of your prior panel? A GTN 650Xi or a GNC355 or something else? John.

That’s the benefit of doing the upgrade yourself.

For example I want the PFD portion to be centered on the yoke as oppose to centering the entire screen, moved to the right, this will allow me to move it up higher as well.
And I want to leave the gear handle up high far away from the flaps.

But the real ? Is why do you still have 1960s technology; the stand alone mic?

In a pinch, the Garmin EIS will display on an iPad running Garmin Pilot. So even if the G500 display craps out, you should still be able to see engine gauges.
