Heathkit was a place to go to get electrical projects and their bits and pieces… for things like building a radio, and learning about Ham radio and getting your license to use it….

Interesting that they have parts that are clearly marked with some kind of FAA compliance… of the design.

There is probably some instance of that being used for GA planes…

Got a pic of the bulb, Mike?

It might have the standard flash tube that is available everywhere…

If the tube is marked with a radio shack label… Can interest you in an LED version?

:)

There is some fun history to go with that…

It looks like the Hoskins name got associated with it over time….

A search of eBay provided some bulb pics….

Looks like in 1975 the Heathkit strobe was gaining popularity… it could be built in one evening… :)

I built the whole weather station for the sailing club...

If that is a belly strobe, may not be needed.   My F only has wing strobes.   Or you can replace with LED from Wheelen.   Any ole strobe tube should work.

Our early Mooneys were built before the requirement for a rotating beacon for night flight. Yes it used to be legal to night flight with just 3 lights no roto or landing light required. If the manf date of "your" Mooney was before the rotobeacon requirement then any beacon was OK to use After that date a certified beacon was required to be installed. Had to meet TSO quals. Looks like this one is before TSO times and maybe old enough to be sent to its grave, I think (IIRC) its still legal to install a non-TSO beacon on the early airframes.

Not many if any FAA types (if any) even know of the early beacon requirements.

Does anyone know how accurate this is? I'd love to replace the soda-can sized beacon currently installed to my 64 with a lower profile LED unit, but don't care to spend 1,000+ on a certified Whelen...

It's my understanding that the FAA routinely interprets the requirements as "if a beacon had been installed, it must be compliant with standards at the time of installation"

Whelen used to have…

A one page ad on their website, that covered lighting requirements by the year of airplane manufacture….

Technically, one could get away with minimal lighting…. Minimal navigation equipment….  Minimal safety equipment… if so desired…

PP thoughts only, couldn’t find the one pager at the Whelen site… see if @OSUAV8TER knows about this detail….

A friend of mine conned the Air Force out of some strobes from an F16. The problem is they all run on 115VAC. You would need an inverter to make them go.
