My daughter has a goalie camp in New Haven Ct , and I’m arriving on Saturday July 10 between 4 and 5. Leaving on Wednesday the 14th. I’d like to fly into Meriden MMK, but would be willing to fly into any airport close as long as I can rent a car ( I’d like to avoid $7 avgas). Enterprise wants$1000 for an economy rental for 4 days. Budget has better rates but at the Amtrak station, and not at 5pm I would fly into New haven but can’t figure out the car thing there either. Looking for advice. Any help would be appreciated.

See if @takair has any thoughts… I believe that is his area of the Mooney world…

Soccer goalie?  or are they keepers?

Field hockey?

Ice hockey…  UHaul really makes sense…

:)

Best regards,

I’m surprised KHVN doesn’t have cars….or is that enterprise at 1k? I know KOXC has them in the terminal and I’m pretty sure KBDR does as well. That said, it comes with Atlantic Aviation fuel rates. Then again, ask if they will wave tie down with fuel purchase.

Have you tried calling the local car rental place at MMK?  Great little airport, great prices, but they may need to do a drop off.

Unfortunately, our area is rather expensive. Approaching NY city rates….which these are suburbs of. I will occasionally rant about the hangar rates in the area. I often fly to a remote location like MMK or 44N for a major too off too….cheaper even after the ferry flight…and I get to fly. Not the best situation when on a trip. Starts to take from the utility of it.

I’ve used Turo before In Florida. My son and I are driving and he said what if we’re pulled over? I never thought about that. We start looking around, no registration, no proof of insurance., and I don’t look like I could be Hector Martinez. That being said I’ve got a car reserved on turo but the closest one that wasn’t a Maserati was in Danbury an hour away. I’m calling budget at new haven directly this morning. Any other ideas would be welcome. I love this group, always good ideas. And yes She’s a hockey goalie.

Rental cars are generally sparse at the moment.  Just over a year ago at the end of the pandemic the rental car companies dumped a large fraction their cars, sold at bargain basement prices.  Now demand has ramped up so quickly they can't get enough on their lots fast enough.  To make things worse, supply chain problems, the car production companies are slow producing cars and also a hot market car that standard car buyers are competing.  So the short run, across the board few cars to rent.

I tried to rent a car in middlebury when I dropped my plane off for annual, no dice.  Not only no car to rent, but the car rental place itself was closed "permanently".  Nothing within 1hr.

In Jackson TN 3 weeks ago, I couldn't rent a car online but upon calling directly to that local car rental place they did have some secret code/extra car to rent.

I'm trying Turo for the first time in a few weeks.

Right now, Hertz at PDX, for a Chevy Equinox or similar for five days would be be $1,331.

With Turo I'm getting a Porsche Cayenne for $630.

These rates making Go Rentals look like a steal…and that’s not easy.  For what it’s worth at least as of a month ago I found their typical ransom rates to be unchanged (about $70 day for midsize) and they have taken over a lot hertz counters at FBOs.

It is what it is. I think for a renter it's ok. For a host they're not an insurance company so they're not bound by the same regulations insurance companies are. That said I've had a couple claims and have been satisfied.

I think most hosts are going after the guests auto policy on their own car first though, because turo can pay less than the cost of repair without a lot of hassle

The cars on there like superb.  I cannot figure why an owner would be renting their very expensive and pristine cars.  I wouldn't.  As a renter, I am really not usually interested in renting a Maserati.  (other than say once to try it out).  Normally if I rent a car, I just want transportation and less worry for when I go park it.  That said - wow - makes me want to go rent a Maserati one of these days,

Wow - I totally get why car companies might be charging whatever they can get - and I am surprised they can get it - but the availability is sparse so maybe some people rare renting.

But cancelling a long standing reservation to flip it for a higher rate?  No good - that's pretty low.  I would avoid that company henceforth.  Presumably the car rental industry will become competitive again.  Despite high prices and some people may be renting them, I can only guess that most people are balking at the prices and doing something else.
