Using AC in Ovation 2/3

I am in the process of evaluating a O2 and O3 for purchase.  Living in Florida I really want factory air and both have them.  However, I've seemed to read somewhere that you can't use factory air on the ground, only in cruise.  Finding it difficult to verify this.  Anyone have good info on this, or was it corrected with AD?

My understanding is that there are no limitations if sb was complied to. Was initially a CO issue. Anyone know what the fix was?

I’d find a way to run that on the ground that’s what there mostly used for! Florida =hot and humid!

There was never a restriction of running on the ground that I’m aware of. 
there were several that had a limitation where it couldn’t be used on takeoff,  but that can be rectified easily.

on the ovation ac vent was moved for the bottom to the top of air craft body, really use our ac system, our system is located on the bottom. ac is handy, over all Mooney does a great job on cooling and vent location

the ac compressor on ovation is driven by a electric motor, have had the system recharged once since 2005, and its used on the ground as a pre cool

For a great conversation on AC details...

There is so much mis-understanding each time this topic arises...

Mostly, because there are so few systems in the field...

Of those systems there are different versions...

 

Getting everything right...  AC is greatly appreciated in the southern climbs...

In NJ... we taxi around with the door open...  :)

I learned that move in WV. Works here in Sweet Home Alabama, too!

But my C ain't got no A/C . . . .

Mine is engine driven.

This is why I stopped looking for Ovations with A/C. I didnt feel like A/C in cruise was needed whatsoever (we really wanted A/C for ground ops mostly). As it turns out, mine has A/C but curiously enough isnt represented in the serial numbers shown. If anyone can do a detailed write up on this and pull info into one central spot, we'd all appreciate it! Someone that knows these birds indicated the "fix" was to reverse the fan ducts or something like that but I do not recall. The Ovations that are impacted should have all been placarded with usage "use in cruise only".

The other questions is, which are engine driven and which are electrical motor drive? I thought mine was electrical but have not seen it.

As stated above it depends on year of manufacturing / serial number. For my O2 GX, MY2006, SN 29-0423 the situation is as follows:

  • The A/C can be run at any time (ground, climb, cruise, ..)
  • The A/C compressor is connected to the engine via a belt drive. On activation the compressor is engaged using an electrical actuated clutch.
  • The useful load penalty is considerable, at least 30kg/66lbs or so
  • Although I live in Germany I like to operate in in summer.. if it's warm, sunny and humid outside..

yep,. all the MSC's know the fix and it is part of this SB20-269. I only know of one Ovation that doesnt have this done yet, but there may be a few more out in the wild.

FYI there is a rather newer STC for AC if you end up wanting to buy an airplane that does not already have AC.  Kelley has an AC system that seems even nicer in some ways since you can run it on the ground by ground power before you ever brave getting into the engine to turn on the engine - pre-cool!

And I believe you can remove the unit in the winter time to increase your UL
