Today's flight for 2017

Off to Urbana Grimes, Ohio (I74) for pie and vanilla icecream today. Cincinnati Lunken (KLUK) to Brown Co (KGEO) a few days ago as a local evening staycation from the day - perfect Rx.

 

The Ohio isn't the Mississippi, but she'll do for my Mooney and me.

After flying 20 hours or so for transition training and getting the plane home, and then getting the oil changed last week. I finally got to take my plane for a 'fun' flight. KCVO IFR over to KONP for their weekly BBQ, KONP-S45-KTMK-KAST to get some landings in, and then IFR KAST back to KCVO. On the last IFR leg the attitude indicator started getting a case of the leans(up to about 10 degrees off), but the plane has an electric backup indicator so all I lost was a working autopilot... and I'm reminded I need to fly without the autopilot more... vacuum looked ok, maybe a hair low, so now I need to go do some test flying on a nice VFR day now.

Another milk run to STS Snoopy was feeling a little feisty today so let him have some fun for a short flight giving me 150 knots true at 4000 feet. Got some free gas from the western hills climbing 900fpm at 135 mph. Sometimes these little C's are just fun.

Vacuum AI generally do not heal themselves. Keep a close watch on yours which might decide to go belly up all at once. A year ago: "R&R and overhaul attitude gyro @ Aircraft Quality Instruments - Wichita" ~ $500.

It seemed to happen as I climbed and got bounced around, so it could be vacuum, could be the AI, could be the phase of the moon. It looks like it has about 500 hours on it. But since it's a King KG-258, there's likely an additional 0 on the end of that overhaul price(or at least a several times multiplier, not sure if they're on the factory-only repair list).

Behind with my posts as usual. Flew to Utah Memorial Day Weekend. I checked off another state from the list, flew my longest leg (4 hrs), furthest from home (475nm), and gave some family their first ride in a small plane. It was a good, fun weekend.

Got a great bit of utility out of the Mooney last week - I had a day open up when I could go "apartment shopping" at my new place of employment / new commute.  Hopped in the plane for a 8:30 am departure and flew from KFWQ to KILM - 370 nm in about 2:35 just as a low pressure area and associated front was moving off the coast.  Caught a fair amount of turbulence going out over the water and broke out at 800' on the ILS.  I had a rental car waiting and saw about 7 places and had an informal meeting with my future employer.  I don't know how those business folks do a full day of working and expect to fly themselves home in time for dinner - it was too much for me.  I was done with my day just before sunset and was just about totally exhausted so I called it quits and pricelined up a hotel for the evening.  Ended up having oysters and key lime pie and sent my family a wish you were here text from the restaurant.  Flew home the next morning on a gorgeous clear day.  As I was flying over the W-Va mountains the cumulus were starting to build and outclimb my cruise altitude so picked up IFR and had some fun in and out of the bumps.  There are some interesting military planes down at ILM with the long runways and various bases near by.  I got so see two harriers on the ramp, an Osprey formation flight in the pattern and a Navy C-40 doing touch and goes.  I got home in time for my wife's graduation from residency.   Fun trip.

Finally got my dad up in the 201 for the first time. Flew hip up to Richland Washington KRDL. Flew over the Hanford Complex then enjoyed some cool planes and some good food. Will be doing my first Pilots and Paws transport. Glad to be a part of getting a puppy to his forever home.

I had a fun and interesting flying weekend that is still in progress.  Flexibility was required.   The initial plan was for me to head to Boston (KBED) and meet my girlfriend and her kids flying there commercially.  We were going to then fly her kids to friends (KBDL) and spend an adult weekend in Boston together.  I took off from Erie, PA Friday morning to head to Boston and spend some time there on my own for a few hours before meeting up with everyone.   I take off heading west, make the East turn and then as I am crossing through 9k for FL190, I saw the text message that the GF's flight from Cleveland to boston had been canceled.  I called ATC and changed my destination from KBED to KCLE and 30 seconds later, I was given direct to Cleveland Hopkins.   I had to run high power and fairly rich to burn fuel to be able to pick them up.  Grabbed her and 2 small kids, then headed to KBDL to drop off her kids with their friends.  Had to fly under O2 levels for the flight, per VIP request (see some of my other posts).  Did a fun 600 overcast approach into KBDL. Then a quick flight and another 500-600 approach into KBED in boston.  We had a great weekend in Boston.  She gathered her kids by car and headed home by United .  I had a great Father's Day afternoon with my daughter (who lives in Boston).   I was able to make it as far home as Binghamton, NY before I ran into a wall. I tried to wait it out and sneak out after it passed, but the FBO was closing.  The lone lineman tonight was great and when we realized  that I wasn't getting home tonight, there was no hesitation for him to pull it into the hanger before the weather hit.  I grabbed one of their cars and headed to a hotel.   No rush to get home.  I'll leave in the morning to get home by 7 ot 8 (1.5 hour flight +/-) as I start Neurotrauma call at 8.  I do have backup if I can't make it.  All the plan changes and unexpected delays are totally worth it to spend a few hours with my daughter today.  Making my girlfriend happy, too, is a bonus.  Couldn't have done it without my Mooney.  N708PJ on flightaware for all the antics.  Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there.  My daughter is my #1 copilot and the reason that I do what I do.

I went and found Mount Hood today. Also went up to 17,500 to see if I could make it... around 200fpm at that altitude, somewhat below gross, trued out at about 128. 15,500 seemed to give about 138 and 9.5GPH. Still need to do a better accounting of the power and fuel flow in the 5000-10000 foot range, I tried to level off every 2000 feet and lean out but my attempt to photograph the fuel flow readout didn't do so well. Also, the hangar elves need to check one of the EGT probes.

Got in about 7 hours of flying today. It was a fun Pilots and Paws flight. I look forward to doing many more. Left KGCD for KRDM then KBYI and back to home. Bad head wind coming home it reminded me of what flying a 172 was like.... Since I bought Freedom March 14th I've put 45 hours of tach time in the air. It's been everything I wanted it to be.....

At that altitude you probably could have seen my home..... looks like a great flight over Hood

Then home Wednesday. Haven't taken too many pics but there's a few 

Messing around with power settings some. Trying to find the balance.

We've seen Yosemite, Crater lake, a bunch of water falls, a weird hot spring in a cave that is who knows how deep.

Flew from Bentonville , AR (KVBT) to Ankeney, IA (KIKV) to drop off my daughter's dog that we watched while her and her hubby went on an Alaska cruise. Took youngest son up too so he can hang with his older sister for a week or so. Dropped off dog in Des Moines, Then ferried daughter and son down to KC Intl (KMCI) so she could p/u her car that was stranded at the airport when the airlines couldn't get them back to where they flew out of due to WX. Quite a day, ended up with 6.3 in the books.
