As I sat, mind wandering one evening, I wonder what would be the effects of metered nitrous injection on airplane engines.

It seems to be, since N2O is inert but increases the oxygen content, this would be a nice alternative to a turbo, at least for climb to altitude.

Thoughts?

Been watching Street Outlaws have you? N2O has real potential to burn holes in pistons if metering not exactly right O2 a lot different than pressurized air.  But lets have some real fun with some CH3NO2

Yes burn holes in pistons and tips off spark plugs (be there done that) if not metered precisely with an additional fuel source and timing retarded accordingly. Probably frowned upon by the crash investigators...LOL

Nitrous adds extra oxygen to the fuel charge. You need to add more fuel to keep the mixture correct.

This is all academic with respect to our Mooneys unless you want to register it as experimental.

It would help at higher altitudes, but it would be expensive. A tank would only last a few minuets at most. How much is that stuff?

So, I looked at the race car blogs. For a 50 hp boost on a 350 Cu in engine, a 10 lb bottle will last about 3 minuets. That will cost you $35

Wow, 3+ lb/min, that's 200 lb/hr. Including a tank big enough to carry it, that's a lotta fuel (or pax / cargo) to offload. Wonder what the extra fuel burn is? Should leave me about 250 pounds UL with me, it and full fuel, but I bet I won't go near 5-1/2 hours or 800 nm.

Yea, $700/hr for 50 hp.

And remember that is on a 350 cu inch engine. On your engine it would be substantially less. But it should last substantially longer.

My engine is a 360 cu in engine, that's pretty close.

Oops, my brain switched back to foreign cars, and wrongly concluded 360 was in liters. Must you guys continually point out my errors :)

No replacement for dis...

To get an extra 100 hp, go IO550.  Lasts for 2,000 hours.  Call the plane a missile.

to get the same extra 100 hp at altitude, add a pair of snails.  Call it an acclaim.

to really improve the take off distance and climb rate remove the interior niceties.  Call it an Eagle.

Nitrous and high compression ratio pistons, go experimental.

Mooneys are cool!

Best regards,

Water injection would be cheaper than N2O, but staying on the "Spray" using either during climb out would sling parts.....lot-o-parts.

The Reno Air Race guys have been doing that for years.  It works, but it's dangerous.  Just like in cars.

I didn't know the Reno guys used it. Cool.

Some of them even use it that are not allowed to.  There are tales of tubular structures being sealed up and used to store hidden giggle gas in the T6 class.

I think this is how @Marauder plans to beat @201er in the F vs J race.

Actually all I need to do to beat Stinky Pant's J is to offload one of the girls and have another one shift her weight back a little to give me a little more aft CG. I think throwing a donut in the baggage compartment might help.

It's actually how marauder gets his sweetie pies airborn, gotta love those full airplane chutes if ones grossly over gross. Weight not appearance

Would not recommend- Seems like a cheap speed mod until you add up the grocery bill.
