Danb Posted October 31, 2015 Report Posted October 31, 2015 l recently purchased the new big iPhone with a screen bigger than many of the portable garmins I've used in the past. I use my IPad Air with the mini as backup( when your eyes get old you'll know why) I've downloaded fore flight, Jeppesen mobile and flight plan on the new phone, has anyone tried the new phone, and suggestions for a yoke mount maybe ram has one. If it tests out I'll bag the mini and always be current with the phone when just flying locally. Quote
gsengle Posted October 31, 2015 Report Posted October 31, 2015 I just use iPhone/Foreflight with iPad mini as backup in my flight bag for local VFR flights... Just remember that the iPhone version of the software is somewhat simplified from the full iPad version, but does all you generally need... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
TWinter Posted October 31, 2015 Report Posted October 31, 2015 A yoke mount with a "X-Grip" will work well w/ the phone. Makes it easy to take with you after the flight and easy to put in when ready to fly. I've used both the ipad mini and ipad, used the phone a few times, but I do miss some of the program features on the full size ipad app. Not quite sold on the phone app, but I really have not given it the time I've given the ipads. -Tom Quote
Danb Posted November 1, 2015 Author Report Posted November 1, 2015 Dave, I don't know if you looked at the iphone6 or iphone6 plus s, which is considerably larger than the 6 or 5..I've tried the mini for quite a few flights and just like the air, I don't mount it on the yoke, just a knee strap. Thinking of putting the big phone on yoke with Stratus and flight programs when needed. It's rather neat that there are so many affordable options and sizes, since one size doesn't fit all. 1 Quote
aviatoreb Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 I keep looking at the big 6 and thinking how it would be too big in my pocket for normal daily use. What do you think? I'm still on my 5...but contract allows me to upgrade now. Quote
Danb Posted November 1, 2015 Author Report Posted November 1, 2015 Erik, I though so to, a store employee had one and said he got used to it easy, I handled it and wanted to see how it fit in my pocket, btw my wife said its stupid, that sold it, it easily fits in pocket and so far the only thing a little different is it feels big in my hand when using it for calls, still no big deal. I do quite a bit of emails out of the office and the larger screen is great, you have 14 of 30 days to bring them back if you don't like it. I did bring mine back to have more memory in it since I realized the usefulness of it for my flying. Quote
FlyDave Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 "daver328-locks" tried his iPad Air in the Mooney and said, "This iPad is too big." Then he tried his new iPhone in the Mooney and said, "This iPhone is too little." Then he tried his IPad mini in the Mooney and said, "This one is just right!" and that's the story of "daver328-locks" and the three Apple products ... He carries two Mini's and an iPhone ... all with Foreflight. Has Daver328 tried yoke mounting the iPad Air? Can Daver328 post picture if he has? Signed, FlyDave (cousin of Goldie)...... Quote

DXB Posted November 1, 2015 Report Posted November 1, 2015 How do you mount an IPad Mini to the yoke? This works great for me: https://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/ipad-mini-yoke-mount.html Quote
carusoam Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 (edited) I saw some panel 'temporary' mounts for iPads and things in Sporty's this week. http://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/catalogsearch/result/?cat=0&q=iPad+panel+mount the 6+ might go pretty well there. Right about where DEV has his portable ADSB device photo'd above...^ The HD screens really convey a lot of detail. Phone based WingX is different than iPad air WingX. Definitely know before you go... gsxrpilot Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 I like the iPad Mini mounted on the yoke. 1 Quote
ArtVandelay Posted November 2, 2015 Report Posted November 2, 2015 Those sporty mounts are more expensive then the devices the hold, a lot for a piece of plastic. Quote
Piloto Posted November 3, 2015 Report Posted November 3, 2015 I went the Velcro way with my Samsung S3 and Garmin Pilot. It works very well and makes it easy to see the weather and email. When not in use I Velcro back the logo. José Quote

Amelia Posted November 6, 2015 Report Posted November 6, 2015 Despite my aged eyes and coke-bottle progressive lenses, I love my iPad mini attached to the yoke with a recently acquired Ram- x-backed yoke mount. It fits in a landscape orientation between the horns of the yoke nicely, fits both the big rubber iPad protecting case as well as, in summer weather, the naked tablet, for very good cooling. It blocks none of the panel, even though my short legs have me awfully close up. I tried every EFB I could get my hands on, some for years. I tried every way possible to fix the regular sized iPad so I could read it and still see over it. Finally found a solution that works beautifully, at least for me: The split screen horizontal-orientation option on FlyQ makes it easy to see both approach plate and sectional view, with a quick toggle to full screen, overlaid plates, or weather, or whatever else is needed. My Galaxy Note 4 is big enough to use as a comfortable backup with Avare, but for now, my happy primary solution is the iPad Mini, FlyQ, and that spring-mounted yoke mount. Quote
larryb Posted November 6, 2015 Report Posted November 6, 2015 I upgraded my mini2 to a mini4. It has a much snappier response and it also is better in the sun. Quote
larryb Posted November 6, 2015 Report Posted November 6, 2015 The mini 4 came out this fall. http://www.apple.com/ipad-mini-4/ Quote
FlyDave Posted November 6, 2015 Report Posted November 6, 2015 Larry, Did they change the lower end of the brightness on backlighting? I still have the original mini and it is blinding at night in the cockpit on the lowest setting. Dave Quote

That reverses the image so white is black and black is white. Edit: if that doesn't work, go to Settings-General-Accessability. All the way at the bottom is Accessability Shortcut. Make that "Invert Colors". Quote

My older brother and I have the small 6, but my younger brother and father have the big 6, and my wife still has her 5 as both 6's are "too big." The battery in my 5 could not get me through one full day. My 6 gets me through two days without recharging. I too think the 6, both large or small, would be great "mounted" somewhere in the cockpit. I have reached out to foreflight to try to find out why a deactivated iPhone can count as an iPod? For instance, it'll do the same as an iPod touch, but also have a 911 call feature should it be needed. That way you can have two iPad's (primary and backup) and two smaller units (your iPhone, and a previous deactivated iPhone acting as an iPod touch). -Seth Quote
FlyDave Posted January 11, 2016 Report Posted January 11, 2016 I finally got my original iPad Mini moved over to the right yoke and the new Air 2 on the left yoke. For the Mini I used a short extension from the mount below the yoke to keep it more out of the way of people getting into the right seat. The Air 2 required the longer extension (3" I think) for an appropriate viewing angle for me. The Air 2 is absolutely FABULOUS (compared to the the original Mini I've used for 3+ years). Pics comparing the two attached. 2 Quote
N601RX Posted January 11, 2016 Report Posted January 11, 2016 I used 2 arms and a double ball joint. It will allow whatever adjustment is necessary to make everything comfortable. Quote

Dan M20E '66 Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 A recent panel cleanup on my '66 E opened up the perfect spot for an iPad. I had an Air, but it was too big so I got the new iPad Mini 4 that has the same anti-glare screen. Mounted with a RAM suction kit, it works great. I also RAM mount an iPhone 6 on my yoke. Combined with Garmin Pilot, a GDL39 3D, plus an EI USB hub on the panel where my old GEM was, I'm in great shape with redundancy and house power. I can't imagine needing a panel GPS unless I graduate to serious IFR. I'll take and post photos soon... 1 Quote
