Hello, all -

Picking up my new-to-me Mooney next week.

Never owned an airplane before.

What essential items should I order this week to get me ready for my mandatory-twenty-hours-with-an-Instructor-before-I-can-solo X-Country?

(Obviously, charts, AFD, POH, FAR/AIM, fuel cup, paper towels, toothbrush and extra underpants. But I'm sure there are things I won't think of (until it's too late).)

Thanx, Chuck M.

Chuck,

Where are you picking her up from?

Looks like you got most of it.  A good headset is a must!  If you don't have one, used Bose X are the buy right now.

I started my flight home with the instructor doing the takeoff, I then learned the autopilot and panel when the instructor watched for traffic and navigated for 3 hrs..  This made me very comfortable for my first landing and pattern work at a familiar airport.  This this worked very well for me and I was solo in 10.5hrs.

Does your new Mooney have a built in Push To Talk switch?  If not, you might think about getting one of those to compliment your headset application.  Wow, what a thrilling experience..........have fun!!

Sunscreen.

You're going to stop somewhere for fuel or something, a Mooney owner based there is going to come over, you're going to talk for a hour about how awesome your planes are, and if you aren't wearing sunscreen you're going to be sorry later.

Bring sunglasses, too.

Sunglasses! Good point.

I need a pair. Any recommendations? And do polarized lenses really mess up your view of, say, a GNS-530?

If you're picking up the new love of your life at KSAT, you'll want some very light clothing, a cap, and some water.  Hot down here these days.  PM me, I may be able to get over and snap some shots of your maiden voyage.

Somewhere along the way, someone (your bank or salesman?) gave you a pink piece of paper and told you to bring it with you.

I believe that's your temporary registration.  Put it with your paperwork today, and you will have it when somebody asks you for it.

Good luck on your trip back....

Might want to pick up one of those folding cupholders at Amazon.com. They're cheap, sturdy, easy to attach, and very handy. Mine is currently holding the screws that came out of my HSI...
