rainman Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Great flight, it was fun to follow all day. I'll see you tomorrow morning at KHYI. Very cool flight! Thanks! Quote
Shadrach Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Nice work Mike. The owner of my company came out and asked me why I was staring at the sky. I asked him if he could hear the airplane drone off in the distance. He nodded. I said "that dude will still be airborne after we've finished our dinner this evening"... That was around 11:15 this morning. Quote
Jsavage3 Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Here's an example of why Mooneys are so awesome!!! Nicely done! Wait till the B/C/P types hear about this! Quote
teethdoc Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 This has been fun. It's awesome to know that in about 10h, I can be anywhere in the country (with stops of course.). I'm bored to tears after about 2-3h. I could almost take a nap with my autopilot on though. Quote
Mooneyjet Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Congrats 201ER, will be standing by on the pirep of how much fuel you took. Quote
yvesg Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Your parrots must be really proud of their captain! Yves Quote
Mcstealth Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Great flight, it was fun to follow all day. I'll see you tomorrow morning at KHYI. Very cool flight! Thanks! Need Company. Would like to go with you in the morning Quote
MB65E Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Dude! That's awesome!! We are all going to poll how much gas you took on! Your block time might have beat quite a few of our Moonies. Probably some specific "E's" and "F's" maybe some big block long bodies too. Did you have o2 with you? Well done! Tail winds on the way back!! Quote
PTK Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Congrats on a great flight Mike! So... is it the Mile high club or the golden shower club? or the mile hi club with a golden shower?! Never ceases to amaze me what our Mooneys are capable of! I'd love to see engine monitor data whenever you get back! Quote
rainman Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Mike, thanks for hanging out at San Marcos long enough for the Vintage Mooney guys to meet you and see your birds perform. Awesome! It was fun meeting you, Truman, and Kili. Based on the 88 gal of fuel you used, and the $1/gal price, you really did get across the country and still got a $100 hamburger! Blue Skies! Ray Quote
jetdriven Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 88 gallons / 1500 miles. 17 NMPG into an average headwind. MOONEY. 1 Quote
kmyfm20s Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 88 gallons / 1500 miles. 17 NMPG into an average headwind. MOONEY. I routinely get 17 NMPG going from San Diego to ID an WY. Mooney's are impressive birds!! Quote
Piloto Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Try to find a car that will give you 20mpg at 170mph. Maybe a Porsche M20L Mooney. Mike isn't a little bit too extreme to fly 11 hours for a $1/gal. José Quote
jetdriven Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 The M20L wasn't as efficient or faster than the M20J, and thats after all the fancy single power lever stuff. Quote

That's why they should have put Lycs on the Porsche cars. I think from the customer perspective it sound better to say your car has an aircraft engine than your plane has a car engine. José 2 Quote

I think from the customer perspective it sound better to say your car has an aircraft engine than your plane has a car engine. José Fat Albert already did it! Here is an old skit by Bill Cosby where he jokes how Fat Albert put a "Cessna airplane engine" in his car. He does a pretty funny airplane sound impersonation too: http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/81583126/ Quote
johnmaher Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 Hi Jim, Last time I flew that long, it was trans atlantic. Pretty impressive trip congrats!! Jack M. Quote
Cris Posted October 7, 2013 Report Posted October 7, 2013 Mike Great job with the flight planing and the parrot training. Nice to know those guys are house broken! Well done on both accounts. Quote
Shadrach Posted October 7, 2013 Report Posted October 7, 2013 To be fare, the J is a medium body. The Lyc IO360 never had to pull a long body through the air. The M20L was like an Ovation/Bravo/Acclaim with a 217HP, 3.2 liter 911SC motor turning 5300RPM coupled to a reduction gear. 155KTS on 10GHP isn't bad. I find it funny that Mooney came out with a high compression single lever FADEC motor in '88, complete with variable ignition timing and the program went T/U taking us back to mags and mixture. I think the M20L was hands down the best looking Mooney to ever leave the factory. Being pretty familiar with ground based Flat 6s in full song, I must imagine that it was about the sweetest sounding civilian piston recip ever made! RIP M20LPFM.tiff Quote
bnicolette Posted October 7, 2013 Report Posted October 7, 2013 Great job Mike! Safe flight home when the time comes. Quote
