Description:

The fastest growing population among pilots has been in the age group 70 years and older. We will discuss, “to what extent does age impact the performance of the average pilot, and is there such a thing as an average older pilot?”

During this program, we will review how CFIs can focus efforts on improving the safety of flying by assisting the more than 200,000 pilots aged 60 years and older.

CFIs can help aging pilots:

  • Maintain proficiency
  • Recognize cognitive and physiological deficiencies as they arise
  • Regularly reevaluate their personal minimums
  • Adjust flying to accommodate the inevitable changes that occur with aging

If CFIs and older pilots do this together, we can continue to fly safely in our golden years.

60 and older? There are 64 year old 747 pilots. There are 80 year old pilots that know a lot more and have better judgment than the wet ink CFI. Whatever.

Is there ANY factual basis that shows "Older Pilots" are having more incidents/accidents than any other age cohort?  Any insurance data?  Any NTSB age correlated accident data?  I'm really curious what, beyond speculation, drove the 'need' for this 'course'?

My current CFI-I which I’ve been flying with every Saturday (weather/maintenance permitting) for the past 4 yrs turned 90 this year. He renewed his CFI after I had been through 5 instructors while working on my commercial, and now we’re finishing up my initial CFI. He’s in really good shape (physical/mental) and can still perform all the maneuvers to ACS/PTS standards, the only thing he has passed me to another CFI for was my Night X-Country and Spin Training. We do local night flights for currency and sightseeing but the x-country was going to run past his (and my) bed time…lol. He also stays current in a Cessna 140 (tail wheel), so as long as he’s able we’re going flying.
