Father and I are looking at a 20E. I'm 6'4 250 , Dad is 6'3 200. How is fitment vs a 172 for us. I know performance wise, the Mooney is really above and beyond. We are looking for something the same size cockpit wise as a 172. Also, any landing gear issues?

The Mooney cockpit design puts the seat considerably nearer the floor than most other aircraft, meaning that the pilot's legs are stretched out in front, and the seat is slid much further back.  In a short body C or E, this makes rear-seat room limited.  If you mission calls for a two person aircraft that is not a concern.   The other thing is that it makes getting out of a Mooney something akin to standing up from sitting on the floor.   It takes some getting used to.   For folks with bad knees it can be killer.

When I get into a 172 now after years of flying our Mooney, I feel like I'm flying a desk.  The Mooney seating arrangement feels more like a go-cart.

All that said if you search this site using google with search strings like "tall people site:mooneyspace.com" you'll learn a lot.

Get dad to come with you...

Sit in a Mooney...

Be surprised at how well you fit compared to the other planes...

If you like speed and efficiency...

Go Mooney!

Best regards,

I'm really close to your size. My 20E fits great. We're starting to ferry around a little alien replica and he plus my wife fit pretty well in there together 2d7643e20b9f9024366d0a8d06fb1d78.jpg

Anyone have Bob's picture of 4.people in his E? This is the best I have in mynC, but the right front passenger is mostly out of view (and he's the biggest one!).

I think the 172 has much better ingress/egress than the mooney. You sit higher and there are two doors.  In the Mooney, you have to lower yourself into the seat. Plenty of legroom but make sure your dad can manage entering and exiting the cockpit.

I am 6'2 and about 260 and a friend of mine is about 6'4 and roughly the same weight and we both fit in my 63 C model with no problems at all.

I'm 6'2" and 200#, and Marauder is both taller and larger, and the two of us together in the front of any of our Mooneys look like a pair of sardines in a tin.  But there's more room in the Mooney than in the front seats of the PA46 where he looks like a size 12 shoehorn wedged into a size 8 shoe.

If you can get in and out of a Mooney, you'll probably be fairly comfortable once in the seat.  IMO.

Hey! I resemble that remark! You seem to forget that your JetProp’s co-pilot was modified to accommodate a Lilliputian and I happen to be Gulliver.

Besides, once that TBM guy told you about entering the cockpit backwards, it all worked out - except for the alternating breathing routine we had to do.

Hey, let us not forget about those adventuresome Mooniacs who believed they could get 5 in a C model.

Contrary to public opinion, size does matter. Nice to see the baggage compartment person made it out.
