I have an '86J model that has had a burnt-out tail strobe as long as I've had it.  I decided to pull out the old bulb assembly to identify exactly which part number it is, and I came up with this.

Where the heck do you get one of these things?  The whelen p/n is A500-1-V-14 and the Mooney p/n is 880041-501.  It has a 9-pin CPC connector on the base, and clearly it came from the factory this way.

Call Whelen. They will know what you need.

When I gave them the model number of my belly strobe, which was flashing on an unknown variable frequency, they said " Wow, that's old. Let me show you what you need." Which was easy, being at Sun n Fun.

This might be a good place to look:  https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/whelenstrobesystema500.php

You could also contact Whelen directly.

The Aircraft Spruce page doesn't make it clear which (if any) have the appropriate 9 pin CPC connector.  "Molex" and "AMP" connector don't inspire a lot of confidence, and the standard is a 3-pin plus 2-pin connectors.

I e-mailed Aircraft Spruce, so we'll see what they say.  I'll try Whelen next week.

Wierdly enough, if I jiggled the bulb, it will flash 2-3 times before stopping, but each flash comes with an audible "pop", so that doesn't inspire confidence either.  If you notice the CPC, connector, the #3 pin is heavily oxidized.  I'll try to hit it with contact cleaner next weel and see if that gets it working again.

These are very expensive.  I purchased one from Lasar in December (seems like it was the only one in inventory at the time) and it was $492 shipped.  Worst part is, it turned out to be a bad connection so I didn't really need it.  :(  I guess I have a spare.

That’s a circular threading connector, aka ms connector. Try this...

You may also want to consider the Whelen Orion led.

Ah, it's also called an MS connector?  That would suggest the A500ABV1 would be the best bet...

And Skygeek sells for $675?!?!?

Upgrading to LED may be cheaper

Are you sure it's not the power supply in the tail?

This is a good time to dump the strobe and the power supply and get this: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/orion500series.php?clickkey=420954

https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pdf/orion-crossover-chart.pdf

If it's $500-600 for the strobe, then the Orion 500 makes more sense.  Thanks guys, I'll try the contact cleaner, and if that doesn't fix it, I'll probably add that to the annual this year...
