The EDM 700 is a good box and can have fuel flow added to it. If you currently have a Shadin for FF, there is a method to split out from the fuel transducer into a JPI box.

Pritch is correct about the 730/830. I did exactly that with my upgrade from an 800 to an 830. His suggestion of calling JPI is a good one, and figure out what options you have in you existing 700 before you call. There is probably a list of what it contains on the 337 from when it was installed. That would be a good place to start.

Hi @Oldguy, (or anyone else) do you happen to know where I could find the details of the "method to split out from the fuel transducer into a JPI box" aside from calling JPI?

Thanks in advance!

The transducer signal is just wired in parallel to both units. Look online JPI's technical support area of their website.

Here's what I found:

https://www.jpinstruments.com/FAQCategory/fuel-flow/

Does FF option require a JPI-supplied transducer?

If the aircraft already has a three(3) wire type digital transducer, then the FF JPI can piggy back off that existing transducer. If this transducer is getting its power from another gage, then you would cap off the ‘red’ wire on the JPI FF harness and just use the ‘white'(signal) and ‘black'(ground) wires. Program the correct K factor into the JPI. (Shadin, Hoskins, Beech, and Piper have K factors of 84.00 to 85.00)"

Follow up question:  Does the JPI EDM 900 (0r 930) use the same harness / connectors as that of the JPI EDM 700?  I am trying to decide whether to upgrade to the 830, 900 or 930...

Unless there has been a recent change, you can not buy a EDM 900/930 without a new harness. So for improved reliability you'll want to install the new harness to avoid connection issues from chaffed wiring as long as possible. But you'll want to reuse many of your existing probes, assuming they are still in great shape. Only the EGT probes suffer from tip erosion from the hot exhaust. Then resell what you don't use with your old unit.

I personally prefer the EDM 900 mounted closer to the pilot vs the 930 mounted to the far right; especially on our Mooneys with limited panel space.

My current installation of the 700 is on the right side of the panel, no FF (I do have a Shadin however).  My first priority is to get data collection of FF so that you (through my Savvy account) can help me tune my GAMI injectors for optimum LOP operation.  It so happens that I could fit either an 830 or 900 in the same location as the 700 (with fabrication of one small panel).  However, ultimately, I would like to move one or the closer to me as you suggested.  That will have to wait though for a time when I am ready to do some other upgrades (Aspen MFD for instance) and I can do without the plane for a while.  So, I what I am hoping to do in the meantime is to figure out how to get the best possible engine monitor with the least amount of effort, installation-wise.  Then, over time, to connect new features and move the unit.  So, I do not mind buying the new harness, holding onto it until the move of the unit on the panel (in a year or so).  Any further advice is appreciated...current panel below:

If i was in your shoes i would replace the the 2 rows of mortiz engine gauges and Shadin display with the EDM 900 mounted right there. Your avionics shop can cut a plate to cover the removed equipment and mount the EDM at low cost. Once painted to match it will look fine. A year or two later when ready for more extensive changes you can get a new panel cut for an entirely clean slate design.

Even with the EDM, I kept redundant EI MAP and RPM gauges, so I would keep your existing ones for now.
Here is how I did mine and I think horizontal mount as some benefits assuming it will fit that way - but you have the portrait option if needed to.

@alextstone unlike the 730/830 some of the 700 units do not have the provisions for FF. Off memory you need a flexible wire coming out the back of the unit for the fourth connector. Might want to check first.

Thanks for the advice!  That is a very nice panel you have!
