I have been leaning towards the same.  I thought, though, that the first 10,000 RANGR Lite units were going to be priced at $1995, and that the price was going to go up thereafter. Have they already reached that sales number or has their pricing strategy changed?

Jim

That was my understanding also, but after calling them to ask a few install questions, they told me about the price increase.  Took me by surprise also.

They do have a program where you can put some money down to lock in the price, depending on your installer.  Aircraft Spruce doesn't honor it, so if you are going to install it yourself (or have your local IA do it) you may have to buy it outright.

For 2020 ADS-B compliance I decided to go with the GTX33 ES and GDL88.

One thing leads to another in the avionics upgrade game --  Here are the before and after images:

Before and After 7155U Panel 1991 555TJ Panel 2016.jpg

OK, I confess; on top is the panel from my "E" model in 1989 and the lower is the "R" in 2016.

I'm not really seeing a difference...did you paint the panel?

Don't you see the electric gear switch in the second photo? He went all out on that panel!

I had mine done at precision avionics in griffin. They were much cheaper than the  quotes I've heard from others.

Funny, I flew in there yesterday and Scotty popped in a loaner KT76C.  He'll be installing the -74 in a week or two.  I feel like I'm a few years behind you...getting bladders, now the KT74 :)

For one of them you need sunblock.  And maybe bifocals.

It just looks different with the plastic overlay removed. Oh, and I removed the ADF and LORAN.  I was going to keep the 90 channel Mark 12A but the avionics installer said some of the tubes are getting hard to replace these days.

Garmin says the glare from my panel won't harm the sun.

But I did notice Jerry by the time we got to Florida in your plane, we both had a nice Garmin tan.

Anyone tried the Appareo transponder with the Stratus 2S?

I've got a buddy waiting to install one in his Cherokee.

2020, so far away and yet so near...

While it is a few years out still, the bennies of free traffic and wx are worth it here in FL, IMO. Both are just plain scary at times. Next, we need to equip the parachuters, drones and birds with ADSB out for a complete picture here.

Keep in mind that with most UAT units, including that one, you have to install another GPS antenna and a small antenna to pick up the squawk from your current transponder.  If your old Mode A transponder ever quits and you replace it with a Mode S transponder you'll have to run a cable between the UAT and the Mode S transponder and the small antenna you had installed won't be used.  All that extra shop time could easily cost more than just installing a TT31/KT74 in the first place.

I need something that can get position information from my 430W, and takes no panel space. Wish there was an affordable slide-in ADSB-compliant replacement for my G327 transponder. Still don't understand why the stupid transponder has to stay, also. The way they keep adding equipment is going to force my plane into obsolescence due to lack of panel space! At least the PO removed things like ADF, DME, Loran, etc. My Brittain units are mounted below the panel, so I can't even move them out of the way.

A month after I installed GTN 750 & GTX 330ES Garmin announced the GTX 345.  Does it display ADS-B traffick & weather on the 750 or just on portables as does Stratus?

Hank, why won't a GDL 88 do what you want? It's remote, no panel space. I have a different WAAS GPS (GTN750) but the transponder is a 327. I'm 2020 compliant and have been enjoying traffic and weather for over 3 years..

I thought that you could not get traffic unless you had out. But GCA says (Stratus 2S):

Stratus 2S includes a dual-band (978 MHz and 1090 MHz) ADS-B receiver and displays traffic information right on the ForeFlight Mobile Maps page. See your aircraft’s relative altitude, climb/descent rate and projected track.

What this tells me is that you can have it all except out notification (and compliance).

Yea? Nay?

GDL88 will take WAAS data from your 430W.  No panel space needed. You can display Wx and traffic on 430's screen.

Hi, Bob.  If I was already WAAS GPS equipped, sliding either a TT31 or a KT74 in the place of my current KT76A would be the obvious solution. Since I am not, though, the RANGR Lite appears to be my lowest cost "out" solution.  I already use a GDL39 3D with Garmin Pilot for the "in" side of the equation, which I am just crazy about, by the way.

Please correct me if I am wrong or if there is a better solution for non WAAS GPS equipped birds, as I am still learning about ADS-B and the various hardware options.  I will be doing the installation, regardless, with the supervision of and assistance when necessary from my IA, so the installation costs will be trivial.

Jim

I'm with you, Jim.  Either we both understand it the same or we are both wrong!  I am doing EXACTLY what you have said to include GDL-39 (mine displays on an AERA 500 as well as Pilot.)

It will display traffic (TIS-B and FIS-B on the 750 and if you had a portable device like a GDL-39 or Stratus, it will give full FIS-B/TIS-B to the iPad apps Garmin Pilot/ForeFlight or one of Garmin portable devices (ex. 696/796, etc.). It could be considered a "combo" device like a GDL-88 with a ES transponder wrapped up in one box. Here is the compatibility list:
