There must be a 'pro' category in the CB club...

Young master Philip showed his pro documentation yesterday. As the Sabre mech must have also.

That takes some dedication to the sport of being a CB!

I mean this with the highest regard of mechanics. My apologies if I didn't type it correctly.

Best regards,

You boys will never win the Cheap Bast$&d of the year award paying dem der prices. I think the key is staying with a mechanic you trust. Knowing the plane helps. My base annual is $1,500 but I always find things I want done.

My J came in around $1500.

But it wasn't a MSC. LASAR has been charging a flat rate of $2700 for just the inspection for a while- it may be more now (last I checked was '12). Realize that that's about $100 an hour. And for a MSC, it's actually probably more, as they tend to get an annual done quicker than the prescribed 24 hours...

Each to their own, but there are many, many mooney's out there flying perfectly that didn't have an annual done at a MSC.

Fortunately I'm not a member of the illustrious cb club, In a weird way it may have some merit, but my extreme lack of skills eliminate from assisting on my annual, I do some oil changes am a hanger rat when my friend does his annual mostly by himself which is where Zim learning the most about mechanical things...but when I go to the spec. For surgery I've had numerous I explore there credititionals deeply..same as using the proper lawyer, being a CPA I don't allow owner assisted audits outside the box or tax preparation too many crooks out there.my Ame left De for Florida so with my issues and wanting to keep flying I'm spending the $$$ to fly to Fl for my medical..what im trying to say is I don't waste money to badly am not frugal but do want the service I'm paying for to be done correctly and with competence...good discussion on this thread which shows our many different outlooks that's good..

A MSC near Atlanta quoted and then charged appr. $3200 for the annual when i bought my Ovation. The fee was described as "the standard price for a Mooney Ovation." Given the issues they didn't find during the annual I doubt they put in the number of hours you expect for that price.

Next year I'll be asking my local AP for a quote first.

My annuals only cost me the parts. My labor is free. Must put me in the really cheap category!

I'm in the same boat, but its not really free. If I wasn't working on my own airplane, I would be working on someone else's and they would be paying me.

I have a feeling that they are jacking the prices up because of the recent good news of Mooney's survival. Hopefully our airplanes will go up in value as well :-)

Ha... So you think our favorite MSC was providing Pity Annuals?

Hard for me to commit to do owner assisted so I help the A&P in other ways.  I repaired his air compressor AC motor when he moved in. (free). He had some equipment that needed to be repaired (a prop support) so I brought my oxy-acet torches over , fixed the equipment and left them there since I don't use them that often.  Someone else brought a MIG welder so I taught him how to use it and make is own towbar. Then I brought over a Lincoln AC welder that I don't use anymore (have a Miller TIG unit) and taught him how to use that too.  I figure he cut my annual bill by 1/3 and did some extra stuff.

Yesterday I went over and he said his golf cart would not start.  45 mins later I rebuilt the fuel pump and it works great again.

He commented to his secretary... When Bill comes over we can fix ANYTHING !.

We usually do !

I do owner assisted every other year. My "owner assisted" mechanic charges $1200 for the inspection. I buy the parts and do all the work. The A&I does the inspection and AD search. My "non-owner assisted" mechanic charges $1,800 for the Inspection plus hourly rate for repairs. Lee

I had the first annual on the Bravo done this year by my mechanic in Los Angeles. I flew down and we finished it in 1 full day + 2 hours the next. Pretty cheap at around $1200 with nothing wrong. I had only had the airplane for 5 months at that point.

Next year I think I'm going to go to LASAR (35 miles from my home airport) and do an owner assisted there. I have always done owner assisted annuals because I want to know as much about my airplane as possible and LASAR is the only MSC in this area that will do owner assisted that I know of.

I'll probably alternate between MSC and my old mechanic going forward. There are specific things about the Bravo that I know he isn't aware of - and either am I. But I'll take a copious notes and pictures for the following year when I go back to my mechanic in Los Angeles. I also really like going back to Los Angeles because I get the visit all my buddies there!

So much of the work on an annual is not "skilled"!  It is just menial tasks that take a lot of time.  The tasks that actually require skill are really minimal once you get into the job.

Everytime I remove an access panel, or all the screws on the belly, I wonder why Mooney didn't incorporate more hinged panels....

Or at least better fasteners. Sheet metal screws? Really??!! Every annual I'm reminded that these planes were never designed to last 40-50 years.

I don't know, what's your time worth?

I think it has to do more with declining demand for their services while at the same time their fixed costs remain the same and labor and insurance cost more and more every year. If you're right, we'll be seeing new MSCs popping up. If I'm right, we'll see MSCs closing down. Time will tell...

$1,500 plus parts is what we paid this year for the J.

Just $600 for all you do?

Lee, tell your IA you want a raise!

(Just don't let him tell you he needs one, too!)

Does anyone actually do a 100 hour using the Mooney check list?

Clarence

I don't do 100-hour inspections, but I do use a checklist for the annual. Not sure where the IA got it, though.

You do.  That is one of the reasons I go to you.
