  1. A hangar home on an airpark is my long term dream as well. Nothing beats taxi and take off from your place without the need to drive to an airport. Unfortunately, these are few and far between in CA, NV, OR and AZ and super expensive.
  2. Thanks, right now I am working out the prebuy and paperwork. Should be fun and LASAR has 3" rudder extensions to help me fit more comfortable. I figure with that and seat cushion, flying will be great.
  3. Of course I'd rather have a 252 or encore but it's double the cost of a 231 even after factoring a new or reman engine, and for that money, I'd get an older Ovation or Bravo.
  4. Congrats on your new J, Andy! Lovely plane quite a showstopper. I love the 201J and was initially looking at one but since I fly a lot to high density airports, wanted turbo in spite of higher cost. If you ever come down to San Diego, I'd be happy to grab lunch at MYF. We have a lot of good places to eat on the field and its a short flight in your new J from STS. I actually did my PPL checkride up there with Benedict at STS before he retired. Nice area. Once I have my new Mooney, I plan to fly up there to go wine tasting and visit friends up north. Scott
  5. Sounds like a game plan- I will coordinate schedule with best option. Right now priority is get prebuy done to make final go/no go decision. Plane is beautiful and flies great and the seller is honest and willing to work with my work/travel schedule as well.
  6. Thanks I agree and will schedule the prebuy.
  7. I think most of the annuals have been done at Crownair so have to check last few logs.
  8. So I'm looking to finish up the offer and paperwork on the 231 and need good recommendation for a solid Mooney shop in San Diego. Seller had work done at Crownair so would prefer a different shop to inspect it for the prebuy. I flew it already and seller agreed to fix major squawks and airworthy items or discount price. I'm hoping and praying the major stuff is in good shape but did budget additional funds for maintenance. Fortunately I don't need to update avionics other than eventually comply with the 2020 ADSB mandate but since the plane has Garmin 530W and 330 GTX transponder, the update is less than without these avionics.
  9. Engine has 1500 hours with a top done 140 hours ago. I think TBO on the 231 stock engine the TSIO-360-GB1 is 1800 hours. Making it TBO would be a dream giving me extra time to fly and put in extra funds.
  10. Agree Sherry is awesome. Unfortunately they let another DPE in the area keep his rating and without naming him, he is a real piece of work who definitely should not be one. It's all politics.
  11. Thanks plane has both a Merlyn wastegate and intercooler so hopefully these are still viable and don't need replacement and can be used with new engine. Even though turbo costs more, from a safety perspective out here west, it's safety peace of mind flying to places like Tahoe, Vegas, and New Mexico with high density altitudes and mountains.
  12. Thanks both good options. Was considering a Bravo but deal is good on the 231 even if I have to put another engine in her still less.
  13. Thanks I'm wondering what new Continental engines fit the Mooney 231 and pricing? I plan to keep me new baby long time and factor new engine would be ideal over a reman, used, overhaul one. I had trouble finding this on Continental website. Plane is gorgeous and faster than a new or used Cirrus or Bonanza at half the cost.
  14. Sorry was stupid Apple iPad autocorrect lol. Mooney instructor of course. I have a good financial advisor already :-)
  15. I'm looking for a good local Mooney experienced instructor to get me checked out in the new 231 that I'm planning to buy soon here in San Diego. Any recommendations are welcome. Scott
  16. Nice to meet everyone. I was out of town in Europe hence my late reply. I'm working a deal now on a nice 231 that is less for me to buy than a used Bravo and has decent avionics. Look forward to joining the Mooney caravan soon! Scott
  17. I'm looking to buy a nice 231 that has a run out engine and factored this cost into the purchase. Besides a reman engine from Airpower or major overhaul, what would good long term viable new engine options for the TSIO-360-GB1 that the plane currently has in it. It's a nice Mooney with great updated avionics and flies smooth.
  18. Nice plane! Guy is willing to let me do prebuy at another shop. Work has been done at CrownAir. We test flew it today and it had some issues so seller will have it looked at. Other than that a fantastic equipped 231 with great setup. Guy really babied it.
  19. Thanks guys, I will check and see who did the last annual. Hopefully it was not Crown Air otherwise I will have to convince the seller to take it farther for a good pre buy. Unless there is another good shop in San Diego, Riverside or Orange County that has Mooney experience. The seller has been great to deal with so far and I am looking forward to see if it works for me. Plane is a nice 231. It has all the things you need like intercooler and automatic waste gate that fix the weak points in the 231 which were later added to the 252. I figure it costs half as much as a Bravo or 252 and can serve me well. I fly 99% by myself and the other 1% with a friend so the payload even with full fuel is sufficient. If I had kids or flew tons of people around then I'd need something like a 210 or Bonanza. Checking on 231 the performance is good. I plan to fly on trips to Seattle, New Mexico, Idaho for fly fishing and hiking and really need a turbo charged airplane to get over the Rockies safely. Otherwise, I would just buy a newer 201J and be done with it. Love the Bravo but operating costs are MUCH HIGHER than a 231 I think. Scott
  20. Hello fellow Mooniacs, I am considering a nice Mooney in San Diego for sale and looking for a decent place to have a prebuy done in the area. Not sure what Mooney Service centers are in San Diego or good place to take it for a prebuy inspection.
  21. Its nice that Mooney finally decided to wisely add two doors to the upcoming Ovation and Acclaim. Still for 700K plus, I'd rather have an older Bravo/Ovation and use difference to buy a home, boat and invest the balance in futures.
  22. Hi Don, Great analysis of the actual real ownership costs of a Bravo. I'll consider all these factors. Hangars are expensive in San Diego as well and difficult to come by which is why I'm looking at buying a hangar airpark home. You'd be the go to guy for a Bravo transition training program. I'm half way thru my instrument rating and would finish it in the Bravo purchased so buying a well maintained one is critical. I'm the same way- I'd rather be flying than working on the plane however I'd want to do owner assisted annual to learn the plane better. It is the best high performance deal on the used airplane market right now. A fraction of what a used or new Acclaim or Cirrus cost with equal performance. Scott
