Thinking about buying a Mooney soon. Been looking around between the F and J models. I see J’s starting to sell for, or at least listed for and pending, around 145k. What would a 67’ F model be worth with updated interior, speed mods, and no autopilot be worth today?

Call Jimmy Garrison at Gmax aircraft sales. That probably isn’t the exact name but Rabbi Google will get you there.

It all depends on the installed avionics, which can have a higher total value than the airframe and engine . . . .

But it's a Mooney! So go for it.  :P

Also check with Richard Simile at Thunderbird Aircraft Sales.

Both he and Jimmy specialize in Mooneys.

As to what one is worth?  It is worth whatever you are willing to pay for one. :D

Having just done one, interior redo runs from about $12,000 to $30,000.  Depending on who does the work, where removal and replacement is included, and what quality/type (full custom or premade) and what you do to the plastic parts.

Jimmy Garrison (contact him through gmaxamericanaircraft.com) publishes every few years a pricing guide for Mooneys, and it is quite accurate. He does not make the document fully public, but if you contact him he will email it to you. That will give you a very good idea of what you should ask for.

You will want an autopilot and will regret not getting one.

I'll agree and disagree. When I bought mine it had no autopilot and because it began life as a D model didn't even have the wing leveler. Flew it for over 500 hours all around the Southwest with a trip to the East Coast thrown in there for good measure. At the time I didn't know any different as I had never flown with an autopilot and was just happy to have a plane. Once the GFC500 was approved I got it in a shop and had it added.

Now with probably 600 hours flying with an autopilot I never want to go back.

It’s all relative fly what we fly, the changes we’ve seen in the last 50 years are astronomical. What’s next. How the heck didn’t we get lost way back.. the loran seemed so high tech what’s next.,Happy New Year. D

F owner and recent buyer, so I saw quite a bit of a/c before finding my plane (through Jimmy). An autopilot was a must for me - it’s a personal thing for me but I won’t fly in IMC without an autopilot. You’ll see ranges from 80k-130k with the usual big factors (avionics, engine, prop, interior, paint).
I had a list of musts: autopilot, midtime or better engine, WAAS navigator, paint that’s decent, and an interior that didn’t make my wife grimace. I paid $110k and got all my needs and wants. Ive since done some minor avionics upgrades, and new interior. I wouldn’t sell for under $125k as I couldn’t replace it for that.

If autopilot is not a need/want, you can find a lot for $15-20k less. I did consider a few with no a/p, but the install quotes were pretty high. Similarly, I avoided a/c that were desperate for paint as that’s realistically $25k plus a lot of down time.

I wanted/needed a no compromises plane that I could fly and not wait on additions and upgrades. For me, I have a bit of a poor man’s J - and it fits my mission perfectly.

All our planes are awesome I don’t consider any a poor man’s alternative to another plane. It could be worse no plane..look at our prior great friends Bob Belview’s E model Chris’s awesome F,  Richard’s D/C Our fleet is extremely versatile full of alternatives. I wouldn’t look down at any of them.

Take a look at Controller and Trade-A-Plane.  I've had a F for years and have considered moving to a J many times.  I'm no expert but for an F, I'd say $100K +/- 30% with some high end outliers depending on avionics.  For a J, I'd say $175K +/- 30% with some high end outliers.  I'd probably sell my F for $100K but I haven't run the numbers lately.  Plus it'll have new fuel bladders after next month.  Engine overhauls take so long these days I'm guessing a low time engine would make the plane more seller friendly.
