I have two thoughts.  One, I don't like the separate database issue.  It doesn't matter how often Victor airways are changed, what matters is that updates have to be installed every 28 days because they might have changed.  So this is another subscription to buy. 


Two, I do like the voice recognition quality that is apparent in the demo's.  I, also, have tried voice recognition systems for document creation and they are worse than worthless.  This one actually seems to work, probably because it has a limited universe of commands to recognize.

One limitation I see on this is that you have to remember the ICAO word for each letter (speciallyif you are over 60). In other areas and countries it is not uncomon to use countries/cities names instead of ICAO words. Like Canada for "C", Denmark for "D" or America for "A". At times I had used non-ICAO words with no problem but I don't think this device is smart enough to recognize non-ICAO words.

The ultimate would be if ATC could directly push our flight plan right into our smart GPS! There should be a way they can upload or we can download a flight plan and any amendments right into our GPS. Much like downloading into a car. I bring up directions to somewhere on Googlemaps on my computer at home and I send it to my BMW. When I get in the car and drive it's there waiting to navigate. No more entering an address in the car. Is this potentially possible with ADS-B?? That would be cool!

No stupid writing down rapidly in short hand, no radio call backs and no tedious twisting of knobs and pushing of buttons. Simple, easy and frees up the radio for actual communication.

In addition, I think synthetic vision, FLIR and the highway in the sky depiction that NASA came up with decades ago could go a long way towards making IFR flying and night flying nearly as simple and safe as VFR flying.

I remember learning the whole transmission by voice protocol thing starting 5 years ago and I just couldn't believe it.  I do some information theory amongst other things in math in my day job.  I could image so many faster easier and more reliable ways...  This is so 1920s what we have

kpc, I found it a real engineering/ certification achievement. The reason for this, we are not talking downloading a flight plan from the box but actually uploading a FPL over another interface. To my knowledge no box I know off has accomplished this with the Garmins....(maybe I am wrong..?).

From engineering point of view it shouldn't be that difficult to pump or build the FPL using the internal JEPP data base, however from certification point of view.....

Hopefully this is a breaktrough for other products. I am wondering how Aspen is going to deal with this (connected panel) If garmin is smart that would develop some added value interfaces to there exisitng GNS equipment installed. I hardly can believe that with the current market saturation of GNS's they will sell the same number of GTN's .....luc

Since the upcoming of GPS I have been filing flight plans with wpts (NAV aids or intersection) only at a turn in direction rather than going along an airway. It reduces substantially the number of waypoints that need to be programmed on the 530. I found that ATC prefer direct routing rather than airway routing. Also if you are not sure about the wpt spelling the 530 prompts you with wpts options as you select the letters.

Sure does sound interesting! Especially since Tower had the gall to fuss at me for not taxiing immediately after my clearance readback, as if the cleared route would magically enter itself into the GPS. People wonder why GA pilots don't favor towered airports . . . And no, I will not try to program the GPS while taxiing, after dark, at an unfamiliar airport!

But I am not a first adopter in anything, and do not mind waiting on actual user reports on how this thing works. Any takers??

Don't forget that Flightaware will email the clearance to you even if you filed it through WXbrief only 10 minutes earlier. I check this first, enter the route, then call clearance delivery. Works great.

I think it is incredibly annoying and negligent of Garmin to have ever built the 430/530 series blind to the victor airway structure of the IFR system.  And still I think it is negligent of them not to fix this.  I have a very hard time believing that a software update could not fix it, and I am sure they are not motivated to make this update long ago since they want to sell 650/750's instead.
