Needing to replace the original windshield on my '77 M20J.

Shipping cost seems absurd- GLAP and other suppliers are quoting between $250 to $400 FOR SHIPPING!.

1) Can someone recommend options for shipping to Houston, Texas and what your experience has been?

2) Also, do you know a good shop to perform this job in Houston/surrounding?

Would much appreciate the help.  Thanks!

Where are they shipping from? Maybe you have it catch a ride with a Mooney headed in your direction.

It’s a fairly big box to fit a windshield in.  That amount of shipping doesn’t surprise me.  UPS and Fed Ex don’t run as charities anymore.

They work on cubic weight, meaning the size of the box overrides the actual weight. Actually makes sense since they can only fit so many boxes in a container. You may double check with Aircraft Spruce about buying it through them, even though it's drop-shipped from GLAP I'm sure they get the most favorable shipping rates

You might try Maxwell to do the work and maybe order the part as well. They might have an easier time using one of their distributors/freight.

Sorry to hijack, but was curious as I checked the price from their e-store.. Does the thicker 1/4" windshield reduce wind noise? If not, what's the advantage of getting the thicker one?

I checked the knots2u site, and couldn't see their shipping cost :(. They would have to contact you after the purchase to get shipping costs. I assume you've tried there too?

oh whoa. it could reduce bird penetration? Interesting; I hadn't thought about an additional 1/8" would have much of a difference for that. I'd like to replace mine in my 79, but it isn't that high on the priority list yet. Not sure what the previous owners did, but there are little scratches on it and in the sun they can light up pretty well at certain angles. not the micro scratches from using the wrong cleaner/rag, but actual scratches. More of an annoyance. It's also the original windshield unless these don't need to get logged (unlikely). So spending extra on getting the thicker/uv shielded one seems like a no brainer. Thanks for the response!

I think it’s a little less noise and a little better protection from birds, but it takes extra several hours to install because you have to mill a step on the edge of the window down to fit inside the joggle  but not too far is to be visible from behind the plastic.

One year ago I had to ship an engine mount for an IO550 from Houston to Spokane and back.  It was crated in a wooden box nearly but not quite as large as one needed for shipping a windshield.  With the box it weighed about 70 -80 lbs.  The cost was $400-500 each way.  As Clarence says there is no cheap shipping any more.  And with the recent spike in diesel prices I am sure it would be more now.  Sounds like you are getting a good price.....just add it to the absurd aviation product costs.

Thanks for the reply bud, yeah, it's absurd to pay 40-60% of the price of something for shipping.

Any chance you are going to OshKosh this year?  GLAP isn't so far away in Michigan.  I've picked up parts directly at the factory previously.

No plans, but yeah, good idea. Thanks.

Really large boxes have to ship via truck or bus.  FedEx and UPS are not set up to ship things larger than can be easily handled by one person.

When I get body work for my race car, they get shipped by bus.

FedEx and UPS both ship freight.   It's just a different process.

I've shipped pallets up to 150 lbs. Using FedEx overnight. It's possible, but not the least expensive route. But equipment downtime at work is not inexpensive either!

Can't imagine the need to do that for a personal item . . . .

The price is reasonable my main advice is purchase insurance to go with the shipping.

Any information on weather the upgraded 1/4” windshield required any type of modification to going into a m20j? My plane is getting ready to get painted and we discovered a couple stress cracks. Now seems the best time to change it.

Ugh- this sucks.

Cee Baileys and Aircraft Glass are both local to me and I just came back from Osh and Houston….booo….

The cost to install it depends on screws (such as are in my M20E), rivets (like in my M20K) or Rivnuts like in my 172…

I hate that Greyhlind shut down it’s shipping. It used to be the cheapest game in town.

If you send me dimensions and to/from zip codes I will quote it for you via LTL, which is a disaster in and of itself.  We have negotiated up to 93% off published tariffs, how such a big number makes no sense to me, but anyway.  I don’t trust package services to deliver anything that can be crushed, also don’t trust LTL either.

Shooting from the hip and guessing, that number doesn’t sound terrible.  Everything has gotten expensive……you heard it from me first.  :)

I’d take him up on it …
