How To Do Paint Touch Ups To Minor (?) Areas

Whats the simplest way to just touch up small areas in the short term...with the eventual goal of having the whole plane professionally painted? Heres a pic of the type of areas Im talking about. I s a simple spray can an option...or brushing something on?

On the left side of the webpage, the top 2 options give you aerosol or a small brush on option.

Hey thanks...so anything with a "JetGlo White" should be good?

Look in the first page or two of your airframe logbook and see which white (Matterhorn, Really White etc)  Mooney used on your airframe if it's original. Or if it's been repainted they should have put the paint names or codes in when they did it.

Painting leading edges is a common topic…

We we’re discussing this only a few days ago….

Leading edges and precipitation don’t really get along at 150kias…

Corners and non-flat surfaces can’t hold their paint very well either… so stall strips are pretty good for losing chips too…

I was looking closely at @Danb’s pics the other day… he had given details of getting his leading edges cleaned up….

+1 for finding paint details in your airframe’s log book…  for really visible areas… a good auto body paint place can supply a match to your paint, fill a spray can, and fill touch up bottles…

What kind of paint to use though? Any auto body type car paint will do?

Back to the logs my friend…

not only is the color in there… but the type of paint that was used…

The logs are an amazing collection of info that goes back to the first day your plane was built…

Some logs are better kept than others… but, the paint is a pretty easy one to log correctly…

An Imperfect match will look a lot better than missing chips…

Look forward to learning about prep, primer, and paint…

For small areas, some people clean the affected area with mineral spirits, mask and tape it off areas you don't want paint, and spray Krylon white aluminum paint.  They say the result is indistinguishable from Cessna white.

As long as we are talking about touch-up  . .   hopefully @Danb chimes in . . .  the "wonderful" shop that maintained my airplane for the first owner left the screws for the hose clamps on the front intake hose in the up position when putting on the top cowling and caused this: (the same shop that put one of the brake pads on backwards)

 

This is the way they are supposed to be aligned (on the bottom, not the top):

 

A question for those who have done touch-ups or blended in paint before . . .  am I capable of doing this myself? If I sanded down those areas and sprayed on the 2 part Jet Glo Matterhorn white to try to blend it in, what suggestions would you have for me?

 

Or there's a mobile touch-up guy that would pick it up on a Wednesday and drop it off on a Friday for $400.

@Danb @Andy95W  As I was typing that a few hours ago I knew the answer by the time I was done. I called him up and drove down to San Antonio to drop off the top cowling. He will deliver it back to me Tuesday or Wednesday.

Awesome I’d love to see his finished product, that’s a steal if it’s matched and blended properly. I’ve got a tremendous amount of time in my red portion, I plan on doing the white in the spring, I planned to have it done by now. Prep time is consuming, the actual paint part is easy.

I had an area about 2” x 1” just above the battery and avionics access panel. I used Scotch-Brite pads to clean it up and applied Alodine. The area was small but I faded the paint with subsequent coats and ended up about twice the original size. After weeks of drying I hit it lightly with something like 2,000 grit wet sandpaper and buffing compound. The rattle can white paint at the auto parts store was a perfect match and even now 5 years later knowing where the area is located I cannot tell a difference either by touch or by sight, and the shine has no difference either.

Did you take a panel to the paint store/body shop to match the color?

Yes I took one of the small inspection panels from under the wing.

For small rock chips I use fingernail polish.   It  comes in infinite colors and the small brush works well.   Of course it's not for large areas but for everyday touch up.   You might get some interesting looks at the checkout counter.

Scan and color match some real urethane paint and spray it out of something… Whether it’s a sharpe finex  FX 300 or a airbrush or something l..   Rattle can will look worse then leaving it alone.

Who are you taking it to in San Antonio? The top of my fuselage from baggage door to the windscreen has lost all gloss (I’m thinking from have a cover on it for a few years while it lived outside).

Does it matter if its urethane or enamel or polyurethane or acrylic enamel?
