Locating an airline pilot

Little of a strange request here. Is there any easy way to locate an airline pilot? 

After I got my private, I was renting from an FBO in New York and formed a friendship with an instructor. We flew together initially as I was working with him on my instrument rating but he caught on as a freight dog flying out of Teterboro. 

I moved to New Jersey a few years later and caught up with him. We flew a few night trips together hauling checks. Shortly afterwards he caught on with a regional and then a major. He moved a few times and I lost track of him. 

Looking at the FAA database, I see he is still flying but there is no address for him. The last I knew he was flying for Delta but may have moved onto American. Anyway to locate him?

Depending on how long ago it was, your instructor's entry in your logbook may contain his SSN. Check to see if his certificate number is 9 digits. If you have his full name and SSN it should be easy to find him (for a small fee, of course). A quick search of the Google showed several sites and a few YouTube videos with more info on how to do it.

Give Delta's HR folks a call in ATL.  Explain who you are, who you're looking for, offer to leave your contact info, and if he's still there - get a message to him asking him to contact you.  Although security being what it is, they could at least put the word out. It's obviously up to him as to whether to reciprocate.  If no luck at Delta, rinse/repeat the process at American in DFW.

Would he have a delta or American email address?  If he does it probably follows the same format as all their other employees. Usually some combination of first name, last name.

Not sure. He has a really common name like "John Smith", but I only saw a couple listed in the database with his middle name.

I think I will try the HR method first.

Be careful what you wish for. Last year I tried to lookup my old CFI who put me through my primary in the early 80's and I found out he was murdered while on vacation in the Philippines about 20 years ago. And after I bought into my Mooney partnership I searched for the first owner, thinking I could get pictures from the planes early days, and discovered that he was bludgeoned to death by his wife about 15 years ago.

OTOH, after more than 20 years I reconnected with my instrument CFII. Facebook can be a wonderful thing. Of course I do have to have his post translated from Norweigian :D And, although it has since been sold, I found the later owner of the Tomahawk I got my private in and even got a chance to fly it again.

Yikes! That is amazing to read. Also, are you telling us if something happens to you, expect it to be murder?! Something like that old Clue game?

I have gone through some effort, with the advent of the internet, to look up and reach out to a few old friends.  All had bad results.  I'm not going to do that any more.  I hope your results are better than mine.  Good luck.

One day I decided to check on the registration of some planes that I had rented through the years. I was horrified to have learned that at least 40% of them had been in involved in serious crashes and many of those were fatal.

BTW -- I never knew there were this many pilots who just flew for one airline!
