Replacing KX-175B with GTN650

I have got a very dumb question!

 

Thinking about getting my bird ADS-B ready and looking at GTN 650! I have a very old KX-175B. Just wondering would GTN 650 do everything that KX-175B does?

No dumb questions , just stupid mistakes......The 650 will do all that the 175B will do.....When they remove the 175B , if it has a glideslope remove the KI214 also or the KM72 it has that.....

Answer: Yes and about 1,256 other things. Not even in the same league as your trusty and very old KX-175B.

The reason I am asking is that I have the choice of grabbing an MX-170C replacement as my KX-175B is on its final breath or should I just bite the bullet and get a GTN 650 + ADS-B transponder? Incidentally, the dimension of GTN650 is almost identical to KX-175B!

Now after having the GTN 650 & 750. If there is anyway I would highly recommend the 750 over the 650. Just my 2 cents worth and YOUR $$$!

The 750 has several features that the 650 does not which I use frequently!

Weather, Airport directory, approach plates and more. 650 a great device I use as backup but 750 is used XX times more than 650.

Either are better than the 175B by a millennium in my opinion.

I think it depends on your longer term plans for the plane. If you are going to keep it, then investing money is just a matter of what you need, want and can afford. I went the 650 route because I wanted a WAAS unit and a glass cockpit. The glass takes all of the information I need for flight from the 650 and displays it in front of me. The 650 is essentially a data entry box for me.

If you have no plans on glass (either an Aspen or G500), I would take Lacee's recommendation and go with the 750.

Yes, the GTN can drive the KFC-200.  That's what we have in our plane.  The autopilot just takes its clues from the flight director system, not directly from the Nav radio (regardless of which radio that is).  So you just hook the GTN up to the HSI as the nav source and the KFC will track either a GPS leg or an ILS.

While you are at it  get GPSS. It is a feature I love with my 430W, GDL88 and STEC30 with Alt HOld.

Just set the approach into the gps and let it fly the route, you handle the altitude with the throttle.  GPS Steering is awesome, just be sure to pay attention to your speeds.  ON approaches, the turns are calculated for c 90 knots. NOT 130.

If your budget allows only for the 650 and gpss vs 750 and gpss,  get the 650. I'm real happy with the 430W and my ADSB solution.

The kx-170 series can be repaired or replaced pretty cheaply and are a fine radio. Not sure if the mx-170c is the same quality.

I have installed two MX-170Cs in place of my KX-170Bs, Byron. So far, so good.

They are 760 channel, have very high output transmitters, and can be repaired very inexpensively, flat rate, at the TKM factory in Arizona, if necessary. They cost around $1500 new these days and seem to perpetually bring around $1100 used on eBay, so there is very little risk in trying one of them on for size if one thinks it will meet their needs.

I have nothing against KX-170Bs. We have used them and KX-175BEs since the late 70s. The two in my J when I purchased it were 720 channel, however, which didn't hack it for me. I also wanted a digital flip flop display and new circuitry.

I had a MX-170B in my plane after one of the plastic tuning gears went for the 3 or 4th time on the Kx-170B. It worked okay. I think I sent it back twice for minor stuff. Since it is a slide-in, if you have a rack problem, it won't fix that issue.

After having flown with your current panel for a while now, Chris, I would imagine that your old equipment seems pretty meager in comparison. There are no frills with the TKM equipment, that is for sure. But for basic VOR nav and com capabilities it gets the job done at minimal expense.

Absolutely! When I first bought my plane, both KX-170s were simple but worked. I think they had a better range than my Garmin GTN. Unfortunately, they succumbed to age.

When I installed the Narco 12D+, I thought I had won the lottery because I had a flip/flop radio! Quite a difference to today's stuff. But sometimes simple is better...

Guess I will hold off an Mx-170 and go straight to GTN 650 later on this year since it does everything plus a lot more!
