Thanks, Jeff. Someone(s) posted about the Rome air show here. It made a nice trip, and a good excuse to visit Mom & Dad on the way home. The visit with Joey Cole was very informative, too.

I am a former Mooney ASC Director of Maintenance, mechanic, avionics tech, and flight instructor, that installed & proofed the first Acclaim retrofit heat system back in 2007. That was in Norwood, Massachusetts just before Mooney went on life support in 2008. I've done HID landing light Field Approvals, Powerflow exhaust installs, one piece side windows, etc. I'm now in Fort Lauderdale and do annuals, pre-buys, and flight instruction by appointment at KFXE.

I'm relocating to Auburn, AL.

OMG!

I sent a son to school there! I didn't know it was a cult.

He now wears strange colors and speaks of War Eagles and Tigers.

I think there is something in the water.

If I remember correctly, Hank is already infected with that disease.  :)

But his spelling and grammar?

And not every sentence ends with "War Eagle".

its apparent in his poorly typed posts and numerous misspellings.

 

not trying to start a fight, but a 4 year degree at auburn is equivalent to a middle school education.

I have an Auburn educated son, and a Georgia educated daughter and when they speak to one another, I think all either of them studied was football!

Just my luck, I moved back South just after the big snow storm last week, and had to shovel out my driveway twice my last day at home so I could load the truck to drive down. There's a chance of more flurries in Auburn, AL, today and rain tomorrow, but Saturday will be a nice day to go airport shopping (my hangar is now too far to drive, it was 607 miles on Tuesday). There's three to check out before heading into the boonies for private grass fields.

Ya'll have a good time, and get all the kinks out so that next year's event will go smoothly. :-)

What is all this Talk of non-sense here. We all know if you live in the Southeast you have to be ROOLLLLLLLing with the TIDEeeeeee.....

 

Anyway, I didn't know there was a Southeast List. How do I get added? I'm in Spanish Fort, AL...I think that qualifies, right?

 

 

As for maintenance here, I use a local IA, but there's a gentleman in Pace Florida, (just outside of Pensacola) by the name of Chip Mapoles. He's very thorough, and while I don't use him for annuals, I have used him for IFR recert, and Prop Balancing. He's dedicated to his work, and backs his product. 

 

I have not had any direct experience with Joey, but I have talked to him on several occasions. I think the reason I didn't initially go to him was the fact that I didn't get a clear line of communication about his expectancies of time and realistic assessment of investing in upgrades/repairs where necessary on my bird. He seemed to be a bit too much of the "I'll do it and tell you afterward" type for me from my few conversations. That being said, hence is the reason I work with a local guy who keeps me very engaged and I track every dollar through the Annual and Maintenance process as if it were under surveillance.

 

He doesn't skimp on maintenance, but he does allow me to have a say in where parts come from, upgrade vs direct replacement (where applicable) , and also remove items, open panels, and close up the plane when it's all said and done. We overhauled the rest of the PC system minus the recently overhauled TC this year. New bearings throughout, new air filter housing...and a host of small things inside including new kick panels, 406 elt, and carpet. Gear and rigging gets checked and adjusted (if necessary) annually. Corrosion inspection and control in the Southeast is fun: spinner to tailcone every year here. (Sorry I'm OCD about knowing what lies beneath) 

 

The Result: In the past 2 years, I have saved enough to justify putting a GTN650 and an MVP50 in this year. 

 

 

 

 

Having gone the MSC route, and now having used a local highly skilled IA, I would highly recommend seeking out someone locally that you can work with who knows single engine airplanes in great detail. The engine is very common, and the airframe plays by the rules of general engagement for the most part. The extremely Mooney specific stuff can either be found in the Parts, or Maintenance Manual, or here, if you are really stumped. Follow the MX manual and Parts Guide to a "T" with a knowledgeable IA who has good work and personal ethics, and you'll save yourself a lot of money, time, and headaches.

This is probably out of your way, but, I've been using Chris Reilly at KSFB AMC and he has been great. Quality, safety, and compliance are his primary focus.  He works hard and on weekends, work is done on time, prices are more than reasonable, and he works on avionics also.  For others looking at this in the FL area, I suggest considering him.

If you are still looking, the local mechanic at my airport, KPLR in Pell City, was the Mooney factory trained mechanic at Epps years ago. He currently handles the 10 or so Mooneys on the field (C, 2 or 3 J, F, 231, 252, Acclaim and an Ovation)as well as others in the local area. He did my annual last year and I have been very happy with the results. Only problems since have been a dying starter and a broken alternator ground wire. His name is Rickey Gilmer. PM me for contact details if you are interested. He is usually at the shop at least six days a week working on planes or paperwork.
