Arrived in San Marcos after not 10 but 11 hours cause I had to slow down to make range. Only used one bag aloft and no bird poo on me. I cant wait till the line guy sees my tanks. His hand is gonna hurt.

Nice work Mike. The owner of my company came out and asked me why I was staring at the sky. I asked him if he could hear the airplane drone off in the distance. He nodded. I said "that dude will still be airborne after we've finished our dinner this evening"... That was around 11:15 this morning.

I routinely get 17 NMPG going from San Diego to ID an WY. Mooney's are impressive birds!!

Try to find a car that will give you 20mpg at 170mph. Maybe a Porsche M20L Mooney.

 

Mike isn't a little bit too extreme to fly 11 hours for a $1/gal.

That's why they should have put Lycs on the Porsche cars. I think from the customer perspective it sound better to say your car has an aircraft engine than your plane has a car engine.

To be fare, the J is a medium body. The Lyc IO360 never had to pull a long body through the air. The M20L was like an Ovation/Bravo/Acclaim with a 217HP, 3.2 liter 911SC motor turning 5300RPM coupled to a reduction gear. 155KTS on 10GHP isn't bad.  I find it funny that Mooney came out with a high compression single lever FADEC motor in '88, complete with variable ignition timing and the program went T/U taking us back to mags and mixture.

 

 

 

I think the M20L was hands down the best looking Mooney to ever leave the factory.  Being pretty familiar with ground based Flat 6s in full song, I must imagine that it was about the sweetest sounding civilian piston recip ever made!
