Just got off the phone with George and, you are correct regarding the revenue from licensing, but he says that revenue will amount to a few pennies per gallon over a very long time, while the revenue from the STC recoups some of their 10- or 12-year investment up front.  Not sure what you mean by "necessary".  Everyone who provides a product or service wants to get paid.

Yes, licensing deals for developed technology is something I'm very familiar with.   I'm also familiar with developers wanting to get paid up front, especially when it looks like their product may not be successful or gain sufficient market share to provide an ROI.   BTDT, got a bunch of t-shirts.   Business is hard.

Unleaded fuel is inevitable.  To minimize the entry cost I bought the STC today.  Even though I am based at KSJC, the local airport pilots get 25 gallons free this Saturday.

The discounts seems to vary depending on when you bought or buy the STCs and whether you are based at KRHV or E16.  I've attached the  program for those interested and near RHV.  Your entry cost totals $620.

Kinda wish I were knocking around out there right now. RHV wasn't a bad field to be based on back when I lived out there.

The STC cost varies depending on horsepower.  The 180 hp Mooneys are $395 ($375 + $20 shipping), the 200 hp Mooneys are $420 ($400 + $20).  The breakdown seems to be $50/airframe + a variable cost per engine.

Happy to learn about those "trucks in Utah"

I wasn’t speaking about trucks in Utah. I was suggesting that the folks there mostly know homemade from purpose built….

This is a purpose built Isuzu N series fuel truck:

And this is what you call homemade…

The “Water” label is a surefire way to keep the authorities from questioning you.

This seems like a heck of a deal. It’s essentially a free STC with 337 for the purchase of some fuel that you were going to buy anyway.

I'm thrilled that we have a viable option of unleaded avgas and I’d do this in a heartbeat. Wonder when they’ll make it to the midwest.

I’ll be very interested to hear pireps from everyone who burns a wingload of G100UL.

My only real concern is that the stuff apparently eats paint, so be careful when fueling…

Edit: STC Cost apparently varies with engine HP, so my cost is in the upper region.

Going to be there Saturday Don?  I’ll be getting stickers applied for N43CA, hopefully in the morning.

I think the concern is that it can stain paint, not actually eat it.  Apparently negated by promptly wiping up any spills.

This is my sole complaint with the STC situation.  The more money you are going to sending GAMIs way in the future, via increased fuel burn, the more you pay up front.

The STC for my aircraft is $1200.  So, I'll pay 4 times the return to GAMI over my lifetime than a guy flying a C model mooney the same number of hours, and I get to pay 4 times as much upfront.

Nonsense.

Actually, just the decals , you can print the 337 and STC yourself.

Maybe but why? For my $20 i got 2 copies of each STC printed and filled out with all the information i provided them! All i had to do is sign to approve it and mail a copy to OKC. That saved me a lot more than $20 in my time to fill out or for most owners to pay their IA to do the same.

I should have used more happy faces.  It's not a big deal, and it's a total non-issue if you're based at Reid Hillview since it all (including the $20 shipping) gets refunded anyway.  But the instructions are to print out the forms and take them to the airport for the event on Saturday for signatures and placards.

Since we’re talking fuel trucks, I’ve never seen one off field and I know we don’t have unleaded on field. I wonder if they burn 100LL in them.

I know for a fact at RHV the fuel farm behind the old AeroTrends building has a 1000 gal Mogas tank for the trucks. It also has two 10K gal tanks originally for 80 and 100. One has been converted to JetA. I know this because I used to run that fuel farm.

Ok, so dumb question from the N00b here.  So I've got my STC, the forms (to be signed tomorrow), and the stickers and plate.  Who puts them on?  Me?  Or do I need a mechanic to do that?

CFR 14 § 27.1541 General.

yes, you can install fuel tank placards on your plane.

If I see an airport locally start offering G100UL I will get the STC.
I am glad a solution has been presented for those at KRHV. A few hundred is a lot better piece of mind than worrying about not having fuel at your home base in a major metro area.
My home airport, KDVT is $6.19ga for self serve right now so $6.99 isn’t terrible. Like with anything economies of scale should hopefully bring it down some if it starts having a more stable rail distribution network.

Are they not peel and stick!

So the situation was very organized this morning at the KRHV terminal building, with a good line of 30 that stayed about that long the 30 minutes I was there.

George Braly was present as a few other GAMI employees and the AI.  They had placards, 337s, STCs and engine and airframe logbook entry forms ready to go as well as placard edge seal and high temp rtv adhesive for the engine plate.  The fueling truck was also there in the transient parking to support.

My placards are now on N43CA and logbook entries also in.  The 337s are in the pre-addressed envelope also provided.  Oh, and a nice GAMI G100UL bag and pin too.

Now I just need to burn off some fuel from my last trip to Oakdale to try this stuff out!

Good to see you there @donkaye!
