Good evening folks - I'm sure this has been posted before but nothing comes up searching on "maps".

How are you all creating those cool maps showing where you've landed?  It's not a feature in Mooneyspace directly.

Thanks!

I was thinking about making an app that imported foreflight log books and did something like this, but had a count for each state or something. Thought it'd be kinda neat.

That would be cool.

it would be easy to parse that from an export of the logbook, are you thinking of accessing their database directly?

it would be hard to get 3 digits in the states at the size of the map below.

I was going to go with an export of the log book. I've looked in to Foreflight API's to access the database, but it's not free. Coupled with the fact that this would limit it to FF and not Garmin Pilot, I decided against it.

I've started a few times since it seems neat. Then I spin up a React project and it immediately has warnings of out of date libraries or Node versions (.. or 'Deno'? Or 'Bun'?) and I remember how much I despise web UI, and put it on hold again. Maybe the 4th try will prevail.

Why not just do a desktop app that spits out the image?

You could do a color heat map for each state depending on how many landings.

This just seemed like such a cool concept. Using this opens up a ton of stuff. Visual routes you took, times landed as a pop-up, export as a fancy 3d image or something, etc. Even global flights.

I'm sure I'll do it one day. I've got some pretty strict deadlines for the real work that pays, that I'm already behind due to a recent unfortunate accident. <_<

Oh, I thought you just wanted to make a better signature pic, but an app to visualize your flights would be very neat.

I have had good luck suggesting features to ForeFlight. Unless you are seeking fame and fortune, you might suggest it to them.

myflightbook.com (free) tracks all of the airports you have landed at and puts them in a little map.

You can also export the list and stick it into Google Maps which will give you not only pins where you have landed, but also the number of visits along with the date of your first and last visit.

Ok this is crazy.  Finally created a map and added to signature.  Now it's displaying ginormous...  Hum.  Any tips to make it smaller and less annoying?

You need to fly in southern Utah, since you've hit everything around it.    It's some of the most spectacular aviation scenery in the country.

Yes!  Was thinking about starting out with St. George.  Great hotel there; Inn on the Cliff.

When you export it, you have a choice of sizes.

Yep; figured it out.  I had to choose the size in inches, not the file size or quality.

I do visitstatesmap.com, and I believe they also have maps for Canada and the Caribbean. I did it that way, but it meant three separate maps. I have seen some people who have a single map covering all three. Then you have to decide the criteria -fly over?, landing? I don’t include a place unless I have actually landed there.

I count places I have landed.  But not limited to landings in my Mooney.

Me, too. I didn't take my Mooney to Alaska, but did fly as PIC while there, including takeoff and landing.
