I couldn't imagine sitting in a Mooney for 9+ hours straight.   Flew about 4-1/2 hours today, with a stop in the middle just to stretch the legs, air out, top-off and use the facilities.  DVT is real.  Sitting in an airplane without the opportunity to increase circulation for that duration is just inviting problems, in my opinion.

I was just thinking about DVT this weekend - I am supposed to book a flight for London to Los Angeles in late August and I may well take the nonstop 11 hour flight.

I was wondering if I should start wearing compression socks for such crazy long flights.  Logically seems like the right thing to do - but any flight surgeons or cardiologists here on MS who can comment?

And if so - maybe even the 3 or 4 hour flights that many of us do on a regular basis in our little Mooneys would merit fancy compression socks?

I've made several tube trips > 10 hours. Stay active the day or two before the flight; walk around the departure airport a lot--I avoid trains and moving sidewalks, carry my carryon (don't roll it) to help myself sleep onboard. Walk the aisles once or twice during the flight, too.

Then stay active again, as much as you can, the day after.

I like compression stockings. I wear them on long trips.

Travel can certainly increase your risk of DVT but the absolute risk is still pretty low (less than 0.5%). I don’t think compression stockings will hurt you and if it makes you feel better to take an aspirin that probably won’t hurt either (unless you’re allergic or have an ulcer). Both of these have pretty weak evidence of benefit but not nearly as much benefit as anticoagulants.

Here’s a good review:

Yeah - I think Im joining the compression sock camp.  I'm old enough to worry about the associated health risks and also old enough to not worry if it makes me look like an old man!  seems like a good idea.

I'm not specifically in much of a risk pool.  I am very active etc, although I am very tall that I understand is a bit of a risk factor.  Anyway, whatever - a very very low effort thing like special socks - why not.

Thanks for the pro tip re aspirin doc!

DVT?

I will look it up.  Ignorance is bliss. :)

Just finished 5+ hours today, fighting weather is the tiring part. Chris noticed you were dancing in the skies this weekend, it’s great w/o the TFR

How did your back hold up? Or those shiny new cushions helping out?

Pretty good, DMAX put in an adjustable lumbar support plus built up the lumbar in front of the support. Extremely pleased with the seat. BTW this summertime flying sucks at times. You were up four more hours, holy cow..

Yeah but you flying five hours straight at your age with your back is equally impressive to be honest.

Unfortunately I suspect about 80% of mooneyspacers dress like this, I am a young kid at 52 still wearing blue jeans shorts, weave belt and new balance sneakers....with white socks.

Our stylist outfits are to much. BJ shorts weave belt white socks and NB sneaks should be our uniform. Especially for the caravan to wow the big O

I wear them and it stops my feet from swelling up and generally feel better when I get off long hauls.  I don’t wear on short hauls.

Just keep them in my carry on and pop on as needed.

With legs like that I would never let you be my latex salesman.

I was so chuffed that I did a turn and burn to Philadelphia (tortoise pickup).  Parrot dude has got me put to shame hard.

It's OK, steiny! We all know that parrots fly a lot faster than turtles . . . .
