Happy New Year everyone!   Today I flew to the Florida Keys to go fishing with an old friend.   Nice day to fly  Real ETOPS (Engine Turns Or Pilot Swims).  I actually wore a life jacket on this leg with VFR flight following.

Thanks -a-.  Filled up with self serve 100LL at APF for $4.01.  Took off and hugged the coast to TUBEE.  From there it was "feet wet" for about 20 miles to Marathon.

NC to MI on a beautiful - and cold - winter’s day. A change from the usual low overcast with icing typical for this time of year. Destination had a density altitude of -3000 feet. 30 kt headwind just meant more time to enjoy the flight -

First flight of the year.  A turn around White Face Mtn - site of the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics down hill ski - still an active ski resort.  Beautiful snowy day.  I had planned to go at 9am but it was still -5F up from -15F when I got up at 630.  So I eventually launched at 1130 when it was up to 5.

Quick overnight round trip from MI to Ithaca; interesting weather both ways - ILS to mins in worse than forecast blowing snow upon arrival - then hurricane force headwinds (but smooth) on the way back - steady 50kts off the nose at 6000’ - worse higher. Uugh. Turned Mooney TAS into a C172 ground speed.  Max I saw was 70+ kts - winds worthy of the west.

The plane got current last week.  I got current yesterday.   I did a nice circuit of local airports today.   Feels good to to have the freedom of flight restored.

Today’s (NOT) flight.  Low IFR yesterday and today all over Western Washington. I drove 12 miles and at 1500 feet elevation this is the weather. Hiked instead of flying today

Learning to fly is appropriate.   3 flights since last May.     still fast on landings.   This was the better one.   There was a skippy slidy one several airports before this one.

Off PWK in the early AM with Chicago in the distance and the marine layer hanging over the lake (lake effect snow in progress). All the bizjets in the departure conga line were heading to St Thomas, Cabo, Freeport, Naples...

Not me, though. Launched into severe clear and landed one hour later with the TKS on in solid IFR and blowing snow. Ahh, the joys of flying around the Great Lakes in winter...

The Cirrus mains are too far back to support the engine weight. Look at the real tail dragger beside it, which also has a tailwheel instead of a sturdy rope and a bent prop . . . . My guess is POI and nose gear collapse.

Probably something like that.   I was out for a flight and when I came back the north runway was closed, which is rare, and they were digging this guy out of the gravel next to the runway.   The nosegear was pretty fubared.   The prop is seriously ground up, like it slid on the runway a long time.    Not sure how he got there, I suppose a brake lock-up may have done it, too, since they don't have nosewheel steering, but a POI is a possibility.   Our state pilot association publishes details on local accidents, so we may get an explanation from that when the next one comes out.

I would bet… the brand Ci plane gets the same guidance we use…

One bounce is OK… not good, plenty of room for improvement…

Two bounces is a sign that things are getting away… throttle up and get out of dodge….

Bounce three… pile driver… prop bender….

Looks like Siri doesn’t like Pilot induced oscillations either… PIOs.

Check for indications of chute usage….  Do you pull the Red handle after the first or second bounce?  :)

There's been a development!  They improved that taildragger pretty quickly.   I'm impressed by the changes.

So I haven’t been in the cockpit for over 7 months now since my plane was damaged. Yesterday I finally broke down and my boss and I went for a flight in his plane. Sadly it wasn’t a Mooney. But it felt good being back up in the air. The weather was perfect.

This is my little town, Potsdam, NY right near the Northern part of NY 15 mi from the border.  Our house is somewhere in that picture.  This is looking North so at the horizon is a low layer of gray clouds that is sitting over the St Lawrence river which is the Canadian border, and on the other side you can see Canada.

Yesterday was just a run the engine to keep it from corroding flight.  2 approaches to keep the pilot's (me) skills from corroding.  I waited for the warmth of the day to fly when it got up to 2.
