I started hearing the starter spin of death for the last month or so. It would always engage on the second try when it would act up. I shot the Magnaflite with silicone once or twice but the next weekend it would sit there and spin. I got lucky when it finally quite engaging. I had just fueled up at home and there she sat. Towed her back with my tractor and the next day I ordered a skytec 149nl from Mr. Casper and started taking the old one out. It’s down right amazing how much I had to remove to get the starter out.

 

It’s mounted with one bolt and three studs with nuts. So the starter had to drop two inches to clear the studs. That meant the induction housing was the last part needing removed to get the starter out. The starter has two locking studs, if they engineered it with four bolts it would have saved me an hour.

 

But I cleaned up the front aluminum baffle covers and some other house cleaning issues with the front of the plane off.

 

When the new skytec arrived my first thought was this is way to pretty to shove up under my engine just to get dirty.

 

I held both starters in my hands and my scale confirmed the skytec is heavier by a pound and a half. That didn’t make me very happy.

 

I started installing at 11am Thursday and at 6pm I had a sign off from a mechanic on my work. It seemed like installing the different starter was like being killed with a thousand needles. It wasn’t one main issue. There was just a few little things the new starter fit differently. From one of the front baffle plates not fitting next to the starter to the power wire being to short. But nothing a dremal and loosening some adells couldn’t cure.

 

My initial thoughts on the starter was not being happy it’s heavier then the magnaflite.

 

The test start, the prop didn’t spin faster then the MF.

 

The skytec makes a much different sound when it engages and is just something I’m not used to.

 

After I got the cowling on, it started the engine right up and hopefully that’s the last starter the current engine sees:)

Should have went the CB route and hand propped it until you overhauled the engine.

Nice work, Charles!

I'm worried about when I might need to do the same to mine.  It's working okay, but boy did it take a lot of abuse when I had the weak mag last year...

Awesome details Charles !   Mine came with the skytec and did the same thing.  Considering all of the abuse it got when I was new to hot starts I was happy with 12 years on the old one. Now that I know how to start it without abusing the starter I expect the the new one to last even longer.

Two things I noticed in your pictures.  The oil return line for cylinder 2 looks close to the baffle.  There is an SB from Mooney with instructions for trimming the baffle to improve clearance.  I’d also add a bead of silicone between the baffle and start nose case to seal the air gap.

I know what you mean. Getting the hot starts down has extended the life of my starter and battery... If I knew the fit was going to be as chalanging and the added weight I probably would have installed a new MF starter knowing the hot start trick. But it’s hard to beat the skytec.

Sounds like a bad day waiting to happen. It’s headed to my msc in a week or two I’ll put it on the list. What type of silicon should I use?

I've seen that B4 on the Husky..my IA had us place a slit 3/8 hose over the oil return line and than rtv to act as a chafe guard

Just an update. The baffle was trimmed but the oil line was not replaced. It did have some wear but luckily it wasn’t to deep. Ordered a new oil line just to be safe.

That sure is an ugly mark left on the oil line...

Thanks for sharing the pic...

Unfound, that line was going to leak... whether it got cut all the way, or a stress concentrator to cause a crack to form....

Way more than a mark, that return line is just a few thousands of being breached

The cylinder head oil return lines are not under pressure so they won’t blow all of the oil out like a propeller governor line would.  They will however make quite a mess as the crack grows.
