Yoke mounted Aera 500 with GDL-39.  Made my own yoke mount so it fits perfectly and will not impale me.  Single wire cable for power, audio, and data.

-WAAS GPS, with approaches in emergency

-ADSB traffic and weather

-Audible terrain and obstacle callouts

-Audible traffic callouts

-Sunlight readable screen

-Doesn't overheat and black out

-Larger display than a Garmin 430

-All for about $1200

GPS 696:

  •  RAM mount on right panel,
  • charts, navdata, terrain, safetaxi, AOPA airport, subscription included with GTN
  • connected to GTN for flight plan
  • XM radio into audio panel - auto mute
  • check lists and text files
  • uses ship power with battery BU
  • backup panel
  • Sunlight readable screen
  • Doesn't overheat and black out
  • Larger display than a Garmin 430
  • I interface with it a lot. Display is canted toward pilot and easily reachable. I pull up destination airport info for runways, freqs, charts, it stores flight info and has flight path map.
  • paid $1000 for it over 5 years ago.
  • Wish it were a 796 for a few extra features including tie in to FS 510 communications.

It's what about 15 mins of work to pull a dock from a panel and replace with four screws and a piece of metal...

A Stratus receiver ($300 at Oshkosh) and an IPad (another $300) with Foreflight ($100/year) for navigation, weather, and traffic. And as a bonus you can take the iPad home and look at all the porn you want.

I have a tablet as well. Garmin Pilot puts traffic etc. on it, no charge, no antenna. But The 696 is much more helpful in flight. The tablet is great away from the plane to plan, brief, and file. In the plane it's mostly in the way.

I tried so hard to fit the 13 inch iPad in my C.  Ended up with a mini and a plus phone.

Not sure how I could closely examine a low enroute chart or plate if it was way off to the side. I really like having it right in front of me.

For people with the panel or far right Garmin portable mount - Would you feel comfortable using that device for ifr instruction / checkride? As the only source for your navigation information?

I love that mount... just ordered one... #AmazonPrime

I sometimes take it off when formation flying left wing! (I set the unit just high enough for the yoke to clear when moved stop to stop.)

Why everyone is not using a Magnetic Steelie tablet mount with their iPad minis or similarly sized Android tablets on their yokes I have no idea. Since having it I now look at the old suction cup or clamp mounts that I used to use and cringe. Do yourselves a favor and try it.  You are welcome in advance. :)

Which version do you use to mount on yoke? I might try the tablet on the right yoke - Nancy likes to follow traffic.

Hi, Bob. I use a Steelie dash ball

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nite-Ize-STDM-11-R7-Steelie-Dash-Ball-Car-Mount-Retail-Packaging-/152321393323?epid=27003300202&hash=item23771002ab:g:TyYAAOSwNE5YWsBe

in concert with a Steelie tablet socket ...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Steelie-Magnetic-Tablet-Socket-Additional-Magnet-For-Steelie-Tablet-/263104571116?epid=1924015305&hash=item3d424126ec:g:FOoAAOSwXQZZdbOk

Don't just buy their car kit because it will come with a weaker magnet socket that is designed for a cell phone.  Buy the two components separately. You can probably get better prices than I linked above.  This was just for demonstration purposes.

The great thing about this solution is that the tablet just "clicks" in place and then you can very easily make minute adjustments of it's angle without even thinking about it in order to minimize glare.  I love it and think anyone who tries it will too.  Please let me know if you (or she) agree.

I had a magnet mount with my previous yokes and was very interested in the Steelie mount. But I haven't been able to work out the best way to mount the base on the yoke?

Amazon Prime is your friend.... I may look at this to add a tablet, I have an extra that is just floating around at home. It would be nice to always have the map/traffic up and use another for notes/info/etc... I may make a plate to cover the hole in the LH yoke where there was once upon a time a clock and use this instead of my Ram Mount too.

Steelie Dash Ball (Curently $9.73)

Magnetic Tablet Socket (Currently $19.03)

Gdl-39 on glaresceen hard wired to panel dock 696. Weather and traffic on 696 with audible alerts for traffic terrain overspeed hardwired into headset. Bluetooth to mini on ram pilot and ram for co-pilot wife. 696 has ships power through unplugable power plug and external gps antenna. Wires all hidden on glarescreen and plug in for gdl-39 at far right of panel. No wires is good.

Do they have ADS-B displays (traffic, wx)?  How do they connect (wires, wireless)?

Given the position most are put in (right stack), I assume you don't really interface with it much, just display moving map, etc?

Why not get ipad mini+GP and panel dock (would be only $400 not counting GP subscription)?

Well it's panel mounted and always on and powered by ships power. The display is brighter, it's got a external GPS antenna. It's wired into the audio panel for terrain, obstacle, traffic alerts, or the 500ft call. It doesn't run an app so it never "crashes" so to speak. It crossfills from the GTN. It also has a dedicated traffic page you can leave it on. It also has AHRS feed from either or both the GTX345R or the flightstream 210.  So it's a nice backup. I wonder how you can fly an plane while looking at your lap or a yoke which turns when you move it. An iPad has its purpose. More easily to modify the route by drawing, or to read long lists of notams. Or for an approach plate.

Hi, Paul. I popped the little Mooney Phoenix yoke medalion out and mounted the Steelie ball mount in it's place.  This works great with OEM 201 yokes but wouldn't work with our C model's pilot side yoke because of the clock and it also wouldn't work with Aero Comfort's beautifully leather wrapped yokes. It works great for me, though. :)

I was afraid of that :(

As an alternative. flexible arm tablet mount will get the tablet out where you can see if you are getting old.   The yoke mount would be too low for me too see with my head at the top of the cabin.

The clamp goes on the panel side to the cross bar that hold all the engine control cables.   I can see over the top of the tablet to put the freq in the radios.   Some times it gets in the way but you can just slap it out of the way.

I used a clamp swivel arm thingie I overpaid for at Sportys, but it hold the iPad nice and securely to the yoke where I can see it and it doesn't get in the way of other instruments.  No way a full sized iPad will fit there.  When apple discontinues the iPad mini I guess I'll switch to another tablet.

My iPad 2 never crashes, my iPhone 5S on the other hand....I have shades I put up to prevent the washout in direct sunlight, and also prevents it from overheating.

I bluetooth my iPad audio to my PS 450A, so I get audio alerts (no wires), Crossfill/external GPS/AHRS thanks to my FS 210. Garmin Pilot has alerts but I haven't used them.

I have no trouble with it on the yoke, generally I'm not looking at it while in turn, I still have panel mount instruments I use on occasion ;)

What I can't figure out is how people can use maps in track up mode?? The plane moves in relation to the earth, so the earth (represented by the map) should remain fixed!

I like the little airplane on my iPad to be in the same orientation as the little airplane I'm sitting in. My view over the nose of the little airplane on the iPad should be the same as the view over the nose of the little airplane I'm piloting.  Track Up.

It also keeps my left's and right's correct.

Flat too ;-) I like them both depending on the situation. If I'm looking at terrain or weather directly ahead, I much prefer track up mode. It's just a fancy HSI as far as I'm concerned then. When I'm looking at weather 500 miles ahead, I prefer fixed map mode to clearly understand the frontal conditions and their usual behavior based on cardinal directions.
