Going to make some calls Monday but wanted to see if anyone knew of a quick location on an overhead knob for the air scoop (part S1003-1-40916). Some stupidity on my part requires me to get a new one

there's another thread that talked about this.  With radio shack shutting down a lot of their stores, they may not be real convenient.  Someone mentioned that it's the same knob that is used on amplifiers.

Sounds like a good story to share with the group. We promise we won't judge.

We might laugh, though. :)

This thread is rather timely. I've been unhappy with the knob in my plane from day 1. Pretty sure it is one of those amplifier knobs, and it's too small to get a good grip on so it's impossible to close the scoop in flight. I finally got annoyed enough to go into the shop and make a new taller easier to grab knob from some aluminum I had sitting around.

Must be nice to have access to a machine shop, looks like you made the other vent knobs as well?

Did you ever try greasing the mechanism so it wouldn't be so hard to turn?

Because of that uncertified knob, your airplane may spontaneously fall out of the air...  Other than that, see the topic on grounding an aircraft on the basis of a landing light switch.  Personally, I let the hangar elves take care of these issues.

So that's O.K. to put uncertified non-aviation parts on a certified aircraft? Alrighty then. There are plenty of real-deal knobs out there. Is this "legal" or not?

Yes, it's a owner produced part, there is an exception, the trick is you can't just buy one, you have to produce, make it .

Whatever. I know your plane isn't going to fall out of the f-ing sky. I asked a question regarding buying a knob that is not designed for an airplane. A knob that would likely do exactly what you want it to do...I asked if it was "legal". I got my answer.

I have also read about the B.S. of the FAA regarding the use of an IPAD...a devise that ABSOLUTELY increases safety of flight...on a RAM Mount being "an issue".

I wonder what the ramp inspector would do when he saw your yoke mount and then saw the fancy knob for the Ceiling Air scoop...?

I wonder.

Do you have any ty wraps on your plane?  Probably not legal.  You need to go back to the cotton cable lacing to be in compliance.

A 1/4" amplifier knob is legal for your 1960s airplane. You are allowed to substitute parts and meterials for the substantially same or better quality. Can you make a determination the plastic 1/4" shaft plastic knob held on with a set screw is substantially similar in fit form, and function to the original 1/4" plastic shaft knob held on with a set screw?

I like it when they hold the fire sleeve on, no kidding this actually happens.

Byron,

I'm not quite sure what you are saying. Should tie wraps not be used to hold fire sleeves on. I have seen fire sleeves split to install without removing a fitting. Tie wraps seem like a good way to hold them on. I have also seen fire sleeves installed "in the middle" of a length of tubing, and a tie wrap seems a good way to keep them where they belong.
