What is that tube....

I was bored and looked at this website. I then saw a Mooney....and it has two tubes coming out both sides in the back. What the heck is that for? The only thing I could think of is cloud seeding or maybe something for drungs...hence it's on a govt sale site! Anybody know? N154MP

That's that same old Liquid Rocket that's been drifting around aimlessly for a couple years. It's a liquid cooled double secret turbo charged engine, I've always assumed that tube played some part of the additional system.

 

I think there's a long thread somewhere that talks about that mod and a bunch of other "fun" things.

Holy cow!! Those are enormous holes. I also don't see an exhaust pipe up front.

Never seen a Liquid Rocket before. Maybe that's how they get cooling air for the radiator? In the front, out the back. Maybe the exhaust goes through there too?

Chaff/flare dispenser system for missile defense.  Hard to see, but the missile detection system involves small antennas and optical detectors on each wing tip and tail.

 

The way things are going, might put one on my plane.

I have to assume it's cooling for the radiator/s and intercooler also probably. My guess is, that plane has a useful load of about 50 lbs.   IDK, maybe the Rocket folks increased the gross weight in the STC.

M20L Porsche speedster with liquid cooling/radiator that has been updated with a liquid cooled 350hp Continental IO550...

Turbo requires being close to the exhaust manifold. Exhaust pipe tips are visible in the photos.

Or they have updated it with air conditioning...

See the really closed up matching cowl. The alternator is still air cooled via a hole.

This plane is for the special Mooney owner amongst us....

Thats ventilation for the Lav mod - you put the john in the baggage area - with the elite version a seat belt expands the occupancy to 5.

I did find another liquid rocket listed for sale (previously) and they claimed an 841lb useful load...  Not sure how this compares to the PFM, but not atrocious.

One of the guys in the Mooney Caravan used to have one... He said with full tanks, you couldn't take the pilot.

The Extra 400 had the similar Continental. They were really trying hard to make the engine work, but the -400 didn't do too hot sales wise either. It would be neat to see reworked, because I bet you could get the cooling drag down to nothing. Maybe Continental should have consulted with Rotax a bit more.

However, A "Liquid Cooled Rocket Ship" has a nice ring to it.

The holes on the sides are the engine radiator air outlet. The NACA inlets are on top of the fuselage, just above the letter P and N. The radiator is in the tail cone connected to the engine via two hoses. Quite a complex engine setup.

I think you meant "legally" it couldn't fill up the cabin.  It may or may not have carried 4 guys in it plus some bags from what I've heard, and still climb and cruise faster than any other Mooney.
