I present to you the new and improved N1162G.  I've had her one year now and have finally completed the upgrades I wanted to accomplish.  Out of the one year of ownership she's been to Lasar, Flight-Deck Avionics and Master Aircraft Services for a total of 4-5 months.  I'm now looking forward to a spring and summer full of trips to see family.

Looks really nice. If you don't mind my asking, did your cowl already look that good or was it refurbished by someone?

I couldn't help but to notice the cowl looked pristine as well. Very detailed work!

She's a beauty!

Better take care of her so she doesn't run off, or to put it more aptly, fly off with somebody!!

Looks nice! BUT YOU AIN'T DONE YET!!!

Next items;

MFD to go with that PFD

New audio panel, preferably a PS Engineering

Time to remove that BK transponder and put it a nice Garmin transponder that you can control through the 750

Get rid of those silly looking analog gauges on the right, time to go modern

Master did the work on the cowling.  That was one area I was really concerned about.  The lower cowl had a hole next to the landing light and many chips.  The cowl flap area needed attention to.  The folks at Master Aircraft Services did a wonderful job with it.  Looks brand new now.  Of course, time will tell...

I hear what you're saying but I consider those items to be pure luxury at this point.  Transponders and audio panels aren't as sexy as a AeroComfort interior.  That's most likely what I'll do next...way down the road.

You are assuming he still has some.

Hey! He can live the dream... Use credit cards.

Don't suppose you'd do a straight trade with me so you can have all the fun again?

Nice.

I learned long ago that toys are cash only, no credit cards.  I can't say that the process is fun however the results of the process are.

Wow. What a plane! I imagine that was a pretty penny.

I bet it was, and if he tried to sell it today for what he put in it, it wouldn't come close to recoup in his investment. But if he flies it for the next 10-20 years, he gets to enjoy a sweet ride, the cost will be amortized over the years, and the plane will be easier to sell when the time comes. In the end, I'm betting he will have no regrets.

No regrets is correct.  Guys, owning a GA plane is NOT an investment, it's a passion.  Unless you have a business mission that fits the 201 it makes no sense to buy the plane in the 1st place from an economic perspective.  So why do it, because you love to fly.  You love the freedom of flight, the smell of avgas, tinkering with your plane, fellowship at the airport, seeing new places from the air, more time with grandkids, etc, etc.

You're right, I'll probably never be able to re-coup the cost of the upgrades I've made.  But I didn't upgrade the plane for economic advantage, I did it for the pure enjoyment it brings me and the pride of ownership I get out of seeing this wonderful machine improved.  I'm not the 1st owner of 62G.  Each owner before me did their part to keep her flying and make improvments.  Now I've done my part.

Monday I went down to Phoenix to pick her up after the paint was dry.  When I got back to Utah after a 3 hour flight (10 hours by car) I was met at the airport by my wife and the line crew who fawned all over my "new" Mooney.  As I was getting into my car a stranger asked me if I owned that Mooney out on the ramp.  He asked what year she was.  When I replied '82 he was very surprised.  I sure felt proud of my little Mooney as she sat on the ramp surrounded by Cirrus and Jets.  She seems to stand a little higher on her gear now ;0)

Here's another way to look at it.  I've got around $140,000 in my 201 right now.  No squaks, new paint, IFR capable, ADSB compliant...the list goes on.

What could I buy new for $140,000 that will take my wife and I on 500+ mile trips at 155kts sipping 8.5 GPH in style?  The only thing that comes to mind is a Porsche 911 Turbo but that will result in the added expense of speeding tickets and incarceration.

In my mind an upgraded Mooney is quite a bargain, even a '82 M20J with $140K spent.  What would I do with the money anyway, leave it to my kids?
