Foreflight and IOS7

I noticed that some of the new features that Foreflight advertises were not working.  After doing some reading and Installing IOS7 they started working.  The features in question are the ones that allow you to draw on and post notes on Plates and Taxi diagrams.

I don't think those are iOS 7 specific. They worked on my iPad before I upgraded it to iOS 7. Must have been something else in your set-up.

It should be noted that they worked AFTER I upgraded as well, further testament to ForeFlight's focus on quality development. This is in comparison to WingX, which has publicly dissuaded people from upgrading to iOS 7 for the time being, admittedly because they think there are flaws in the OS rather than in their own software. I don't have a dog in that hunt, but find it curious.

I went back and read the note on Foreflights website again and It said IOS 6 or above is required for the annotations.  I was still using IOS 5 is why it would not work on mine.  You must have already had IOS 6.

I installed IOS7 when it was first released last week. I'm not usually the first one in the pool when it comes to "upgrades" (i.e. as an engineer supporting large networks I never liked bening on the bleeding edge) so I'm not sure why I jumped so quickly :( .

Since then I've had a very strange instability on my iPad Mini. Without me touching the unit (screens or buttons) it starts zooming in and out randomly, scrolling up/down and left/right and changing apps. I haven't noticed any data being changed so I'm not sure if that is happening as well. This would be quite unnerving in a busy cockpit on an approach in IMC.

Has anyone else experienced this bug?

When is the last time you closed down all running apps and "rebooted" your iPad? The only thing I noticed after my update was a bit of sluggishness but that ended after I rebooted.

I find more crashes everyday on my old ipad1. WingX and other apps as well... Quick recovery though. Just restart the app. Just sharing an observation.... Best regards, -a-
Anthony - time to upgrade big guy. The iPad 1 has a number of limitations and some of them are processor speed and display refresh rates. Many of these newer apps are taking advantage of these. I have an iPad 2 and have noticed my refreshes of maps are a bit slower than my buddy's iPad 3. It's too bad FF doesn't run on the Droid format. I have a Nexus 7 running Garmin Pilot and it is great.

Chris,

I followed the advice to turn it off and on again...

Took it flying today... Running WingX and Cloud Ahoy... No crashes since the reset!

The iPad 1 was slow on day 1. It makes you feel better, when you can out think it.

JimR pointed me in the direction of factory reman'd iPads. I'm dragging my feet, but I'm heading that direction...

Best regards,

-a-

Dave,

I had this issue develop in my mini Ipad before IOS7 but only while using FF. I was able to submit a video of the problem to Foreflight and had a good exchange of mails with one of their techs but they could not find the problem. Then I went to Apple, showed them the video and coincidentally the problem happened while on another app. Result: the problem was with the screen and they exchanged my unit since it was under warranty.

I have found IOS7 to be a battery hog, too. Not good for a long flight.

Did you time how long it lasts while using FF?, I had several flights over 4hrs in duration this summer and starting fully charged it lasted the whole flight (using IOS6). But I agree that if it is your only source of navigation and if you use the screen at full bright there could be a concern. I let the screen go dark since it is not my primary nav. I also have a cigarette light charger which works very well with the mini.

I'll check and post, Jose. I estimate under three hours (battery varies). On the Iphone, it was terrible. Half a day.  I am new to Foreflight. Love everything about it. Could somebody point me to FAR's for cockpit use? Is it a 100% replacement? Or is paper still required? Would a second Ipad or Iphone suffice as a legal IFR back-up?

I double check settings and make sure nothing has been left on. I doubt it though.

Amig,

Thanks for that info!

I'll contact Apple this morning and see if they'll replace it. I've had it for less than a year so it should be under warranty still. I'll post once I get it resolved.

Thanks,

Dave

John -- yes, 100% replacement. I carry backups (iPad, Nexus 7 and iPhone).

There is no legal or regulatory requirement to carry FARs onboard, nor charts, with a few very limited exceptions (certain airspace around LAX, for example).  There's consequently no requirement for backups or anything else.  See http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/flight_info/aeronav/faq/#q8b for the FAA's answer.  Of course, it's strongly encouraged, and if your lack of charts results in other violations, you'll probably be violated under 91.103 as well, but there's no specific requirement to have the charts.

As already mentioned, there is no FAR that required charts for plain vanilla Part 91 flights to begin with, just as a side-effect of the 91.103 requirement to have "all available information" for a flight. 91.21 is also important - it's your obligation as PIC to determine that your electronic gadgets don't interfere with your equipment.

As to the FAA's position on the use of EFBs, there are two relevant ACs (bold emphasis is mine).

AC 120-76B, which deals with the FAA approval process for Part 123, 135 and Part 91 Subparts F and K and specifically mentions that "Aircraft operated under part 91, except for parts 91F and 91K, require no EFB  authorization or compliance with this AC, provided the EFB does not replace any equipment or  operating information required by the regulations. AC 120-76B (EFB)

AC 91-78, which deals with EFB use in plain vanilla Part 91 ops. AC 91-78 - Part 91 EFB  The closest to a discussion of backups in this AC is "It is suggested that a secondary or back up source of aeronautical information necessary  for the flight be available to the pilot in the aircraft. The secondary or backup information may  be either traditional paper-based material or displayed electronically." In my case, my Android phone running a second (free) app is my backup to my iPad/ForeFlight combination)

Sportys has a pretty decent summary: http://ipadpilotnews.com/2013/09/ipad-legal-briefing-for-pilots/

  • 2 weeks later...

After I upgraded to IOS7, I lost all of my waypoints, routes, etc.  Anyone know if there is anything I can do about this other than re-enter them?

That's weird. I'd write to ForeFlight support on that one. I have a database of Colorado mountain passes that I loaded into my 1st Gen iPad. When i bought my 3rd Gen iPad, they came right along with ForeFlight and haven't been lost in the iOS 7 update.

Have you tried (1) iPad reboot and (2) uninstalling and re-installing ForeFlight?

I've tried the iPad reboot, but not uninstalling and re-installing ForeFlight.  If I do that, would there be any chance that  I loose all of the charts, airport info, etc., etc. that I have previously downloaded?

Maybe, but since a 28-day data change is upon us anyway (I'm running my update right now), does it really matter?
