anAscendancy Posted October 14, 2012 Report Posted October 14, 2012 I'm in the middle of a firewall forward restoration on my 64 E. I'm doing the J cowl conversion. One question though is will my simitar spinner and bukkhead work with the J cowl? Or does the bulkhead come out farther? Quote
anAscendancy Posted October 14, 2012 Author Report Posted October 14, 2012 And if so does anyone have a J bulkhead and or spinner for sale? Quote
N601RX Posted October 14, 2012 Report Posted October 14, 2012 The backplate extends foward about 2 inches more Quote
Rated_E Posted October 18, 2012 Report Posted October 18, 2012 I have a 66 E that has been languishing in the shop for 2.5 years now, came with a 201 cowl and the mod started. Recently bought some flanges and forward skins off a broken 201 and has merely created a different set of question marks. If you have any progress, pictures or knowhow on this process i would delight in sharing. Quote
Hank Posted October 18, 2012 Report Posted October 18, 2012 It goes with the homemade bat laying across the engine mount! Quote
KSMooniac Posted October 18, 2012 Report Posted October 18, 2012 I'm glad to see such a project going forward as well! My first thought when beginning the shopping was for a Super-E modded-up to 201 specs. I just bought a salvage J, but it has front-end trauma. If you need any parts let me know and I'll see if I can help you. Quote
Rated_E Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 Was looking for some insight, pictures and how to avoid mistakes from anAscendancy. Scott did you end up with the 201 in Oshkosh? Quote
DaV8or Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 Please, somebody develop a kit and an STC for this process and put everybody out of their misery. Quote

I did indeed. It is not in my possession yet, but hopefully will be able to get it in the next 2-3 weeks. Quote

KSMooniac Posted October 19, 2012 Report Posted October 19, 2012 It had some parts I wanted as an upgrade for my plane, as well as some spares I want to tuck away for inventory to support my J. The engine was overhauled recently (220 SMOH) and it has an M-20 Turbo kit on it, but the engine and accessories sustained some damage... I plan to salvage what I can from the firewall-forward and start assembling another engine at my convenience so I'll have one ready to install when my time comes. The rest of it I plan to part-out to recover as much of my cost as I can. Once I get it home and squared-away, I'll start listing the easy stuff here first like avionics and instruments, and of course taking requests. I have no illusions of actually making money on the deal, but I hope to come close to getting my money back and ending up with a pile of parts and upgrades that I wanted. My labor of course is free for accounting purposes. EDIT: I'll add that the cowling was unfortunately destroyed, so it won't be useful for a cowl conversion. There are pieces left that I plan to forensically investigate for reverse-engineering purposes, though. Quote
M20F-1968 Posted October 20, 2012 Report Posted October 20, 2012 Rated_E: I put a J model cowling on my 1968 F with DER approval and 337's. I would be happy to discuss the project with you. You can call me at (617) 877-0025 or e-mail me at johnabreda@yahoo.com You will need a set of cowl flanges (pieces installed between the firewall and outer skin). You will also need to rebuild your engine mount, installing the weld-on parts to support the J model cowl flaps and will need several cowl flap parts. You will need a J model spinner and bulkhead, or better yet Hartzell makes a spinner and bulkhead the installs behind the prop hub . You may need to do some fiberglass work on your cowling dependinh on its condition. There is also a recipe on how to cut back the firewall flange to make the cowling fit. First your engine and mount must be shimmed properly. These are just a few of the highlights to think about. John Breda John Breda Quote
Sabremech Posted October 20, 2012 Report Posted October 20, 2012 I'm working on an STC to upgrade the cowling on our vintage Mooney's. It's going to take a while to get it finished and through certification. I'm looking for an upper cowl off of a 66 or later C,G,E or F to use for this STC. I want to keep flying my airplane while working on this and use another set of cowls for the mod. Thanks, David Staffeldt Vintage Airworks. Quote
anAscendancy Posted October 22, 2012 Author Report Posted October 22, 2012 I will post pics after I'm done. Waiting on the bulkhead at the moment for cowl placement. Quote
M20F-1968 Posted October 26, 2012 Report Posted October 26, 2012 You will need to have the engine shimmed, bulkhead/prop and spinner in palce before you cut the firewall flange and position the cowling. You will need to assess the cowling position in relation to the bulkhead/prop. John Breda Quote
M20F-1968 Posted October 28, 2012 Report Posted October 28, 2012 I have an excellent top cowling which is available from my plane, 1 1968 F model. You can e-mail me at johnabreda@yahoo.com or call me on my cell at (617) 877-0025. Thanks, John Breda Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted October 28, 2012 Report Posted October 28, 2012 I have a brand new hartzel spinner for a 201 cowl if anybody is interested. Quote
Rated_E Posted August 31, 2013 Report Posted August 31, 2013 Has been a long time since this post updated. Have bought cowl flanges from a broken 201 along with some side skin and finally have the bulb bright enough to do some good. Image as of today, need some more camloks and a straight engine mount to fit it for good. 1 Quote
M20F-1968 Posted August 31, 2013 Report Posted August 31, 2013 You really want to install the enging, level the airplane, shim the engine mount, and install the cowling starting from the spinner/bulkhead and working aft. Â John Breda Quote

triple8s Posted September 1, 2013 Report Posted September 1, 2013 Would be nice if there was an after market kit available for converting to the 201 cowl. It wouldnt be simple as there is more to it than just the cowl itself. 880 had the original 201 cowling mod done by the MOD SQUAD when they were in Fenton Mo. they did a nice job but as I said there is a lot more to it than just the cowl. Some of what had to be changed are: oil cooler, air filter, oil cooler hoses, scat hoses to the oil cooler, scat hoses from air filter to carb heat box, scat hose from heat muff to carb heat valve, air intake from baffling to muffler shroud, scat hose from muffler to cabin heat valve, landing light wiring, engine baffling, Carb heat valve/box, carb heat air vent on underside of cowling, spinner, spinner bulkhead and maybe more stuff I am not aware of. I guess it just depends on how much you feel like putting into an old airplane. I sure loved my short body and if there was anyway possible to retain my current marital status and keep 880 and the "O" I would have two planes right now. Hard to part with a plane that costs like a C-172 and cruises almost 150 Kt. It is for sale on barnstormers right now if anyone is interested. I know every nook and cranny of her for sure. Quote
Alan Fox Posted September 1, 2013 Report Posted September 1, 2013 Why doesn't someone buy the STC from Russell Stallings...Its already out there..... Quote
Rated_E Posted September 1, 2013 Report Posted September 1, 2013 Have had this project for 3 years and made more progress in the last week than previous 150 weeks, is on the edge of my talent level. John B did you have a new skin on the left side? My intent is to go back with a new skin on the left same distance as the rt side. Feel free to share thoughts, pictures before too late. Â Quote
DaV8or Posted September 1, 2013 Report Posted September 1, 2013 Why doesn't someone buy the STC from Russell Stallings...Its already out there..... Â I don't believe Russell has the STC for the conversion to a real 201 cowl. I think it's the folks from Mod Squad that have it. Russell has an STC for his "201 style" cowl, which is what I have. It sort of a marriage between the vintage cowl and the 201 cowl. It's a huge improvement over the vintage cowl, but not as good as a real 201 cowl. Quote
